My son lives near Altmar, NY, a little village about 40 miles north of Syracuse and 15 miles east of Lake Ontario. They live right in the middle of the lake effect snow band area. I spoke with him yesterday and they have 54" of snow on the ground it was still falling. Snow is halfway up the sliding glass doors leading out on their deck. DW & I considered moving there when we retired a few years ago. The summer months are so nice. But, as always, a little rain (or snow) must fall so we're satisfied to go visit in the summer. The attached photo is from 2007. It is worse this year.
