I have a 97 Holiday Rambler Endeavor with an old backup system -- black/white analog monitor. In a word, it works. In two words, not well. I'd like to replace it with a color system and something that could fit the original space (attached to ceiling). Anyone done this? What brand? Use same wiring? Etc.

There are wireless systems, but the reports I've seen on them indicate they are problematic in longer vehicles, e.g. motorhomes. And running a new cable under the coach is no big deal, though getting it up to where you want to mount the camera may take some creativity. And you probably will need a new cable, both to to give a quality color signal and to match the connectors on camera and monitor.

I'd suggest a better quality bran, even though they get pricey. There is a big difference in camera performance with increasing price. The cheap ones don't handle a broad range of lighting conditions very well (and  back-up camera gets everything from direct sun in the lens to shadows or morning and evening lighting) and typically have a rather narrow field of view. I have a color Sony that auto-adjusts for lighting and gives 170 degree field as well as a long way down the road behind me.  I can even see the ladder on the back of the coach!

Here's one system by Audiovox

And a source for Sony

And some other brands

Dick,

The camera, based on a Sharp lense, seems like a good one. I like model with audio. It beats watching for my wife's hand signals. Listening to what she says is easier to translate. :>)

As to the monitor I assume you were speaking of one of the models made for a headrest.

I haven't looked at my existing cabling. It's good to know that what you recommend may work.

How is the camera in a situation where you have shade and bright sun at the same time? This is when some cheap cameras fall apart. My assumption is the Sharp should handle the light situation like that.

A vendor that Gary mentioned seems to be the type of guy that stands behind what he recommends. He sounds like the type of guy that only had to be bitten once.

This is the monitor I used

It has a pedestal mount and audio input as well as video. We don't use the audio because we have a pusher and all I can hear is the Cat Purring. We use radios instead.

The camera I posted does well in all light conditions and is exceptionally good at night. The inferred really lights up a long way back. I did have to cut my shroud because it is a good bit bigger than the original. The audio model is $159 scroll down to the pricing and it's the one on the right for $10 more.
