Location
wherever we are parked
Today I discovered the neat map sponsored by the datastorm user group that permits one to find the location of members on a map.

For example my own location is currently shown at:

http://map.datastormusers.com/level3.cfm?mapnum=3035296

I am number 3149 on that map.

Now my question is, how can I search for other members.  Say I wanted to know where Ron Ruward is currently sitting, assuming he is a member and updates his location.  Is there a way for me to query the system and find the location of another member?  I think this would be handy for our forum members.  Incidentally you do not have to be a Datastorm user to join this group.  they even have topics for direct TV, etc.

I would greatly appreciate any help I can receive about how to use this neat map locator.

I have no idea if you can search, but you could look down the list under their main map: http://map.datastormusers.com/index.cfm - you'll see some familiar names there - or you could ask Ron for his ID number (if he's submitted his info).

Tom:

Wonder if we could build a list of forum members who are interested in being mapped?  I will start the list by giving my number as 3149.  I think numbers are needed as names are too ambiguous on that list.  I understand if some forum members do not wish to keep this sort of public location identification.  I just think it would be very cool, for those who do not object, to be able from week to week, spot where other members are located.  It might even lead to some nice minirallies!  :D

Anyone besides me interested in doing this?

If someone is new to the datastorm web site, it is easy to get set up.  You first have to register as a forum member.  Then once you are inside any of their forums, you simply click on the map form tab at the top of the forum page.  Have your gps coords ready.  Enter them in the calculator and it decimalizes them.  The decimal format is used to put you on the map.

A side benefit is that I found that the datastorm forums are VERY useful for almost any kind of electronic/sat dish/ tv kind of problems.  VERY knowlegable people are there.

Sorry, no interest here, but folks are free to post their DSUG ID number.

Thanks Tom for letting me ask.? I suspect I am the only one interested in seeing where other members are, but maybe there will be a few like me who are interested.  It might be a fulltimer kinda thing, as we fulltimers have no stick house addresses.

Those of us with Datastorms, just use the lat/lon from the controller to position ourselves on the map whenever we set up. ?One button does it all :) ?

If you know the member number, you can use a URL like this:

http://map.datastormusers.com/user2.cfm?user=10

This is the same group that you stated was "too geeky" awhile back. ?What changed your opinion?

Too geeky?

I thought I just discovered this group Ned.  But if it was some time ago I said that, then I was either overwhelmed at the time with all the new RV knowledge coming at me, or I was involved in a specific question where I needed plain English help.  Don't recall, but I am sure you remember it better than I.

At any rate, can we get your number?  Also is there an easy way to search by individual, or do we have to look through the entire list?

I do like these forums very much need, despite what I may have said in the past.  Sometimes I AM wrong you know, like thinking I would get more mileage on my MH than on my toad LOL!  ???

I posted a question this morning in their TV section and anticipate getting some help.  I also did some reading on various forums and learned a LOT!  ;D

Smoky,

Ned already gave you his number and the link directly to his listing. His is the only one I remember  ;D

Wow!  He lives right oin the golf course!!  And how did he get such a low membership number?

So far we got:

Ned & Lorna - 10
Smoky & Sharon 3149

I'm 10. ?I was an early adopter. ?If you use the http://map.datastormusers.com/index.cfm link you can use your browser search function (Ctl-F in most) to search the list on name or number.

Smoky, see http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php?topic=786.msg6626#msg6626

Ned & Lorna - 10
Ron & Sam - 1879
Smoky & Sharon 3149

Yes Ron.  Sometimes when you are new at something and overwhelmed with data overload, it takes a while to sink in.  ;D

Here's another related and useful web site: http://www.satellitefriendly.com/  It's run by Sterling Udell and his DSLocator program makes it very simple to post your location both to the Datastormusers map and his database of satellite friendly campgrounds.  You can search the database when looking for a satellite friendly campground.
