Thinking about taking a short 5-6 day break with grandsons 8 & 12 yr olds for their spring break (parents working) - maybe going down to southern Il, Paducah area around end of month for this (and as a the initial test run with the toad). Sure it'll be warm enough to camp .. Little too chilly yet to head further north, east or west yet and haven't stayed in this area before so looking at some interesting things that might be in area of Shawnee Nat'l Forest..
Am aware of the KOA campgrounds in Benton and Paducah area.... Anyone have experience with campgrounds in area south of Benton / Carbondale / Harrisburg IL, north of Paducah, or in Shawnee Nat'l Forest?

A number of years ago we stayed at Massac State Park in Metropolis, IL, right across the Ohio River from Paduca. If in the area, we'd stay there again. Large, open spaces with water and electric. Don't remember the size of your rig but we had no problems with a 41' coach. Your grandkids will love touring Metropolis, it is the home of Superman with a giant statue and neat museum.

In Illinois, just to the north of Benton, there are numerous sites around Rend Lake.  Very nice state sites as well as federal.  If you go on into Kentucky, I'd suggest Hillman's Ferry in Land Between the Lakes at Kentucky and Barkley Lakes.
