Vertical HF antenna tiltup from 5th wheel hitch
« on: June 30, 2011, 05:24:51 PM »
So I'm reading the weather sensor thread and I had the maybe not-so-bright  :) idea of welding a metal rotating 12" long 2+" diameter steel tube to the fifth wheel hitch.   It would rotate front to back and in such a way that it wouldn't interfere with operation of the hitch.    I'd probably remove it completely while driving except for the mount.

Then when stopped the tube would be start as roughly horizontal while you'd put in two or three 4' fiberglass pole extensions and then the 23' vertical HF antenna.  Now that could add up to about 35' so that's long ways out in front of the 5er.    Then just tilt up the entire assembly and lock it into place so it can't rotate back down.

Hmm, but that wouldn't work well for radials or the ground now would it?   Hmm, ok, scratch that idea.  Not so bright after all but I thought I'd post it just for discussion purposes.  OTOH screw driver antennas don't have radials so ...
