Guys,
I knew this day was looming in on us after our beloved Apeo had a stroke last
Thanksgiving. She weathered it fairly well and seemed to be getting better day to day. On Friday, she had another mini stroke, and was kind of so-so as far as normal activity goes, but doing OK.
We found her this morning laying in the hallway "right in the middle" as she always has, but she was gone.

We're a bit heartbroken, but life goes on and so must we.

A Parting Prayer
Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.

So very sorry to hear about losing one of your best friends.  Having just gone through it ourselves about 6 weeks ago, I feel your pain.  But I know that we and you gave them the very best of ourselves while they were here.  And of course the love they give us back is a hundred fold.

Thanks.
Grief stinks no matter who or how and this topic more appropriately describes her final resting place.
Thanks Gary for moving the thread after I placed in the wrong topic.

We can only give thanks for the time we had together and hope to meet again.

But this brought up an interesting question in our family I'm not sure how to answer...
We were literally one day away from embarking on a trip, planning to take the dog. What would we have done if we were several hundred miles from home and woke up to find a deceased dog?

Is there a "proper protocol" per say? I'm sure it has happened to others, especially full timers I would think.

What have you guys (and gals) done in similar times?

So sorry to hear of your loss. We went through it recently ourselves and fully understand what a hole it leaves in your life.

It was Tom that moved the message here form General Discussion.

She apparently knew what was coming, and perhaps did not have the strength anymore for it, so she did what she thought was the best thing to do and save you all the decision making that would have had to be made, she just made it a little easier on you.  I have no pets so can only suggest what I would do.  I'd find the closest vet and have them cremate her and I would carry her ashes to a place that she would have liked to be and bury her there.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  My heart goes out to you and your wife.  We've had and lost pets too, three in my arms, and I just do not want to feel that pain ever again, it was far too wrenching on me, especially the last one.  So, we've chosen not to.

Losing a furkid is heartbreaking and you have my deepest sympathies.

If I lost one of my furkids while on a trip, I would probably try to find somewhere that cremates pets.  I know that might be difficult to do but that would be my first choice.  If that wasn't possible.... I don't know!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our hairy kids creep into our hearts and then break them when they leave. Thank you for the prayer...I've copied it to use in Sam's scrapbook. As for what to do when traveling, contact a nearby vet and they can direct you to a place that does pet cremation.

Thank you one and all. Anyone who "owns a dog" but doesn't "have a pet" can't imagine the feelings. Those who have never opened themselves up to a non human family member don't know what they are missing.

I think the hardest part for me is going to be the lack of an always glad to see me, meet me with a wagging tail member of our family. There are other little things that spring up too.
We finished a peanut butter jar today and didn't know what to do with it...the Apeo ALWAYS licked it clean.

for those who liked the poem, I found it here. http://www.petloss.com/poems/poems.htm Gotta give credit were credit is due.

There were many I liked, but that one hit home.

It's never easy losing a family member, two legged or four. It's been a while for us now, but from time to time, ours can still bring a smile to our lips or a bit of a tear to our eyes. You do the best you can for them, and when all is said and done, we're rewarded for the time they're with us. Fond memories my friend.
