While visiting the Amana Colonies in Iowa for a few days, we took a side trip to the American Gothic House in Eldon Iowa.  This is the actual house that inspired the artist to paint American Gothic.  Jan's ancestors have a long history in Iowa and many old photos have the serious Grant Wood look.  We have been working on genealogy in the area and thought it fitting to take the pose to add to the photo history.  We really are pretty happy folks but had to play the part.

Cute!  Glad to see you're taking this whole thing seriously.  ::)

Are those your own clothes or do they rent you ones that match the painting? You could have been the Happy American Gothic and done it with your usual happy smiles :)

We did a happy one for you.  Costumes and pitchfork are provided by the American Gothic House Center.  No admission charge, donations accepted, pictures are $2.00 each or they will take them with your camera for free or both.  The place is 100 miles from Des Moines, a lovely drive through rural America.  Once there you will find the house and the new center that is a very nice tribute to Grant Wood including exhibits and videos.  I'm impressed that locals were able to get this accomplished, we found it an interesting side trip as you can see.

Great pictures, both of them.  What fun.  ;D ;D ;D

Once while staying at our daughter's place in Maine for the summer, and coming around the house, a big old rambling farm house that is so prevalent in the area, we had to go past the front of the house to get where we were going, and there they were, she and her husband, posed just as you are with the garden tools.  Of course, I didn't have the camera handy, and no time to stop and get it because of the traffic.  But that scene is seared into my memory forever.  What a hoot.  So good to see you both looking so well and enjoying your travels.
