I have an older tent trailer which has only 3 12V bulbs and a 12V blower on the furnace; it has an ice box so no juice goes there. The converter/charger has died, and there is no connection for a battery. What I was thinking of doing is installing a battery with a car charger/maintainer. Can this be done?

Yes, you be better off with a smart battery charger so you don't cook your battery.

Sure.  The furnace fan is a good sized power draw, though. Probably around 5 amps, so make sure that either the battery is large enough or the charger can provide the required amps after the battery runs down. Most "maintainer" chargers only put out 1-2 amps. A typical automotive battery charger will be 6-10 amps, which ought to be sufficient for your needs.

RV Roamer is correct.  When I had my tent trailer, upgraded the battery to a group 27 and ran a Honda 2K watt genny when needed.  The genny powered a 10 amp automatic charger during colder nights when the furnace was called for.  Worked great.  You probably know that the insulation value of canvas is almost zero so the furnace will run a lot during those nights!  When the furnace wasn't needed, just ran the genny during the day long enough to top off the battery.
