If you're driving a motorhome and towing a car, the car needs an auxiliary braking system to help you stop safely. Without such a system, a car weighing say 3,500 lbs will mean that there's 3,500 lbs pushing you when you try to stop. Most states require auxiliary brakes when towing a car, which adds a legal reason and, in the event of an accident, a potential liability reason for having them.
