We are planning to go to the 2012 balloon festival in the first two weeks of October.  I think the weather heading south from Vancouver BC would be okay???  We will probably head through Idaho, Utah, and then tour northern New Mexico before the festival.  Afterwards we want to see the Carlsbad Caverns and then we will head west towards California and then turn north back to BC.  We expect to return home during the first or second week of November.  Any areas such as Grants Pass that we should be worried about re: snow/ice??

You can get early storms in the Siskiyou mountains in November, but the roads get plowed and you sit them out. Don't have get-home-itis, leave a pad of a few days in your schedule and you'll do fine.
