The Long Key State Park has a message on it's website saying the park is closed to overnight campers due to construction, but it is very much still open. They just aren't taking reservations.
We stayed Sunday night at Pennekamp in Key Largo (not a great camping park) and our neighbor told us the "inside scoop" on Long Key. We called to confirm, and sure enough, the ranger said the construction had been delayed and until equipment starts moving in, they are allowing campers. We moved here yesterday and have already decided to extend our stay in the Keys for a day longer.
What a difference from Pennekamp! All of the sites are spacious and are right on the water with amazing views.
Not sure how much longer the campground will remain open, but right now, it's apparent not too many people know. We are one of only five or so sites that are occupied.
There you have it!! You're welcome  ;D
