We are considering a 6/12 month trip to the US, in our UK motorhome (which we will ship across). Can anyone recommend an insurance company in the US that would deal with insurance on our motorhome for us? Its not a very common motorhome (Mercedes 508D Coachbuilt) although I don't suppose that makes too much difference as the UK and US motorhomes don't seem to be that similar.

Thank you so much.

Here's a list of some insurance companies previously suggested by forum members and staff. You'll need to contact them individually to ask if they'd insure the RV. Just curious, is a right-side or left-side drive? Don't know if that would affect your premium.

Ah, good, that saves you driving backwards to be on the 'right' side of the road  ;D

Hello...

We are a couple from the UK just finishing off our 8 month tour of the US and Canada...we looked at shipping our UK RV over too...most people would not insure us...

We got an offer for insurance for our British motorhome in the States from the below American company... we dealt with the manager, Ms HINES...this is a company who specialise in providing insurance to diplomats and service personnel abroad but also offered insurance to us...once they understood what a European van was...the quote was over $1300 so very expensive for 6 months - especially when you consider that we have insured our US van for $300 including breakdown and Canada for 12 months...

www.sunriseworldwide.com

A German company who will ship your motorhome out are called Seabridge - www.seabridge-tours.de - they will also insure your van but again it will be expensive...it covers the US, Canada and Mexico - if you email them they speak English and will send you a quote...

In the end we bought an RV in LA and have travelled around in that... we worked out the cost of shipping, insurance and changes we would need to make to the van for the US would mean it was cheaper to buy here, travel and sell...

Hope that assists..

Tom: Right or Left hand drive. Do insurance companies ask which side it is? Vin number would make it obvious it was an import.
Please Taraanddave, did you find it easy to sell the RV quickly? Did you get a reasonable price for it, compared to your original outlay. I ask because at some time in the future we too will be looking for an exit plan (though I hate to think of the idea of being on a plane home for the last time... ever!)

I have no idea; I was merely curious.

Hello..

We have only just advertised the RV on RV Trader and will probably lose $2 -3000 on it (compared to what we bought it for) but factored that in to our budget...not bad price for a wonderful 8 months driving around the states...

While it is none of our/my business, would you tell us approximately how much it would cost to ship the RV from Europe, so that we can compare.

Thanks for telling me. I am interested to see how easily it will sell, so could you please keep us informed through this forum.

Thanks Tom, I was just being nosy, it isn't likely that I'd take a coach over to tour.

Hello...

We have sold the RV now - it didn't take long - a couple of weeks...
We had the back up of a consignment sale but sold it privately in the end...
RV Trader on line was excellent and its a doodle to use (and inexpensive)...
I understand March/April is peek time for selling RVs but we did ok over the Xmas period...

Enjoy your trip..
