Tim and I arrived in Camp Verde, AZ (south of Sedona and north of Phoenix) last Wednesday.  We had just come from a week spent at Usery Regional Park in Mesa, AZ which is by the way a great park.  It has large open sites, tons of parking and very dark skies at night.  The weather was fabulous and we are really enjoying Arizona's start parks.  They are very nice!

Here in Camp Verde we are parked at "Distant Drums RV park", a full hook-up campground with exceptional facilities ie laundry, club room.  They have a very large open area for hiking, which Charlie sure enjoys.  On Thursday we spent the day catching up on laundry, bills etc.  That evening we ate at "the gathering" a restaurant located in the hotel of the local casino, dropped a few $$ in the 1 cent and 5 cent slot machines.

Friday we visited Montezuma's Castle and the Well, which is home to the cliff dweller prehistoric Indians.  Saturday, we rode the Verde Valley Railroad line meandering along the scenic Verde River, sipping champagne, snacks; even saw a very large bald eagle.

This afternoon, Peg and Don Miller picked us up and gave us a tour of Sedona, a mystical-beautiful area.  We had been here several years ago; but it was fun going with them.  Don drove us to the Chapel in the mountain which was designed by a sculptor and Frank Lloyd Wright.  It is very beautiful and the location is spectacular.  All four of us toured galleries, artist shops and ended up eating dinner at their favorite Mexican restaurant.

Tomorrow Tim and I are going to Jerome while Peg and Don begin loading their coach for Quartzsite.  We both leave on Wednesday; that is if Tim's package arrives on time.

I know the expectation of a mini-rally by documenting with photos, but since everyone forgot their cameras, I took a few shots on my phone.  Now I have to figure out how to get the photos off my phone onto my computer; it's not a smartphone, just one of the old fashioned ones....

Marsha,
Thanks,  Di and I are going to the Good Sam Rally in March and I have been looking at Southern CA and AZ for fun stops. We have been to Sedona and Jerome several years back your timley note will add Camp Verde to the list. Diane went to ASU and was raised in Kingman so we will make the rounds while on the west coast. Just too many great things to see.

We are also going to the Good Sam Rally in March.  We are spending one night in Tempe to go to an Angels baseball game and then have reservations at Distant Drums until Friday.  We have never been in the area so we are really looking forward to it.

Well, today we  took off for Jerome, Tizagoot Indiana ruins and Cottonwood.  The ruins are very interesting and you can walk all through the them to some extent.

In Jerome, Tim and I forgot the name of the great hamburger place that Peg Miller suggested we try; but we stumbled onto a fabulous restaurant called "Grapes".  It was exceptional!!!

Like everywhere else,  Jerome has little cutesy shops, so we checked a number of them out.  The most fun was the kaleidoscope shop with beautiful kaleidoscopes of all shapes and sizes and other very interesting art work.  We came home with a moving water/sand painting that we both keep playing with.

Tomorrow is: Charlie Groomimg day, laundry, and grocery store in preparation for leaving for QZ on Wednesday.  It's cold here, spitting snow and supposed to rain tonight.  The heat pumps are working great down to 30 degrees!

Our favorite restaurant in Jerome is the Asylum, with a view to die for!

I agree, except the best views are from the Patio and I'm not sure it was warm enough for "patio" dining.

It was VERY cold and spitting snow; eating out on the patio was not an option... :) .  Plus, Marie, I didn't even see the Asylum Restaurant.  We did spot the Haunted Hamburger, but I remembered Peg telling me it was near the Kaliedoscope (sp) shop, so wasn't sure.  It's really nice that Jerome has so many nice places to eat.

Marsha,

The Asylum restaurant is in the old historic Grand Hotel, way up on the hill. Believe me, it is quite a production to get there with those narrow, steep winding roads, however well worth all the trouble. Sitting inside, there are some views of the valley, yet have to admit, you have to be lucky to get a window table. Reservations works well for that!!

I remember the day in '75 that I came from Prescott to Oak Creek Canyon and decided to come via Jerome in my class C Leprechaun.  I was sure glad it wasn't any longer than 23'. ;)  The Catholic Church was the 1st Cathedral for the RC Dio of AZ.

The only restaurant was very small and very expensive, people made reservations from Phoenix. It was "The House of Joy."

Bob,

In or about '96 I drove from Congress to Prescott and then on through Jerome in a 35' class A towing a Honda Accord.  It was an "interesting" drive to say the least.  I was thankful for learning to drive on MT roads pre-Interstate and and for the time driving truck through Yellowstone.

Quite a trip!!

I slept in that class A! I'm glad you had that background too --and why wasn't Pat driving?  ;) I could do it now in an A, once you know the steps and where your tight curve spot is.

That was back in the days when she knitted while drove or she read a book.  Later I had a problem for a short while and she started driving for a couple of hours a day.  Then she exercised her prerogative, SWMBO, and took over the driving.    :)

With her problems lately I have been able to drive on all the trips since last spring.  She is better now and I expect her to again exercise her control especially since I won't be able to drive later this spring for a couple of months.  In fact, she will probably have to do the hookups and all the blue jobs for a while.  :) :)

Don't know if anyone else replied to you about the photos...you can email them to yourself, then you'll have them on your computer!  8)

Marsha - Thanks for the report esp. Usury Pass and Sedona. Haven't been there in years, hope to get there this year. I bet Charlie had a ball. He's such a neat dog!

Jim and Di - Nice to hear from another ASU grad. Go Sun Devils!
