Lou Schneider and her other fans will be sad to learn that Marta Becket held her last performance at the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley Junction CA on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.  If you have followed this amazing lady you already know that Marta stopped dancing a couple of years ago after a fall.  She's now 87 but says she'll still be available to greet friends, fans, and artists.  She'll also continue her artistic endeavors and mentor other artists.

For those who don't know about Marta, she had a ballet and acting career in New York City.  In 1967 she bought the old Corkhill Hall in Death Valley Junction and proceeded to renovate it herself, including painting murals on its walls and her stage sets.  After renaming it the Amargosa Opera House, she opened its doors and put on ballet performances for more than 40 years until her fall.  Her fans are legion and have visited from around the world.

If you Google "Marta Becket" a Wikipedia article outlines how Marta came to the Mojave Desert and it has been updated to include her last performance last weekend.

Thanks for the post Ardra, Very sad to see her stop performing. We have seen her many times over the years and even stayed in the motel once. She has really earned the right to retire after so many years.

We saw her dance back when we were working in Death Valley in the 80s. She was old then ! I had heard that she was doing her "dance" sitting in a chair so perhaps it's best that she bow out gracefully now. Her painted "audience" is certainly worth a visit if you're in the area (not that there's anything "in the area" LOL).
