I have a Sony A55 with the stock lens.  I'm looking for a lens that would be suitable for taking photos of wildlife . . . I don't know enough to select one without advice.  The stock lens takes good pictures at short range but doesn't zoom far enough to get good pictures of wildlife, which is where my photography interest is taking me.

I have been shooting wildlife with my Sony a55 since the camera was introduced one and half years ago. I have the Sony 75-300 but it is not very good for wildlife. I use the Tamron 200-500 and get great results. It is as sharp as the proverbial tack, light weight and cost me $750 used. New they are $950. Look at the images in this album:

Most of the telephoto shots were taken with the Tamron.

You will also notice a number of extreme wide angle shots that I took with my Rikonon 8mm fisheye. It is a manual lens, but it is only $300 and it is a blast to shoot with.
