FWIW one of the guys in our ukelele band plays a uke with 8 strings, and one of the ladies plays one with 6 strings. The 8-string guy sat behind me at practice last week, and that instrument sounds much more a guitar than a uke.

I've come to learn that the 8-string and 6-string ukes are known as 'taro patch' ukes.
 
About ten years ago I bought a mini Flying V guitar. It was about the size of a large uke. Very cool and easy to play.
