Crossing the Border with Firewood
« on: July 08, 2012, 01:51:48 PM »
We crossed from British Columbia to Washington at Osoyoos/Oroville  a few days ago.  On the US side, we were asked if we had any firewood.  When we said "yes", we were directed to go back to Canada and get rid of it.  We turned around, showed our passports to the Canadian officials, and got directions to a nearby provincial park were we could dispose of the wood.  The campground host there was glad to take it.  Luckily, when we got back to the border crossing, we encountered the same border agent, who waved us through.

Just a heads up to anyone carrying firewood!

Between Gypsy Moths, Emerald Ash Borers, and who knows what else, these days there are areas where you can't even move fire wood to the next county.

There are also restrictions on moving firewood within the Us for the same reasons Joel outlined. It varies a lot from State to State.

We've run into the firewood restrictions before when traveling between provinces in Canada.  Each time, there was a place for us to drop off the wood at the border.  It's the first time we've been refused entry into the U.S. (we are U.S. citizens).  Anyway, just wanted to warn other border crossers.
