The orthopedist says DW?s hip stress fracture has healed nicely, so we can finally get off on our somewhat delayed summer trip. We expect to leave (from northern Illinois) tomorrow morning. Do to the late start, we figure we will have better weather if we do our normal route in reverse, and hit the high country near the beginning.

We will head for the northern section of Bighorn Canyon N.R.A. We?ve never seen that end of it, but if it is as nice as the southern end, it should be worth a couple of days.

Hwy. 212 and the Beartooth are good fo 10 days or so. We?ll head through Cooke City and do The northern end of Yellowstone. I have always had a fondness for Pebble Creek C.G. After a few days there, we?ll cross Dunraven Pass and stay at Canyon and/or Bridge Bay for another 10 days. While we?re there we?ll make sure to stop at the book store and look up Jim, Bill, & Jolene.

We?ll drop down to the Tetons for a few days and then back through Yellowstone to catch Chief Joseph hwy. It is well worth a few days. Little Sunlight c.g. is free, is delightful, and we have had it all to ourselves every time we have been there. If you can find Sunlight Falls on the map, and then if you can locate the right two track, it is an amazing sight. There are multiple streams running out of the side of a cliff for about 150 linear yds.

We will hit the southern end of Bighorn Canyon N.R.A  and if the weather holds, we will spend a week or so in the Bighorn range. Next, we?ll aim for the Black Hills. One area there that is often overlooked there, is Spearfish Canyon. It has some nice hikes and several beautiful waterfalls.

By the time we hit the Badlands N.P., we hope to see some nice weather instead of the 100+ degree heat that is so common there in mid summer. After 4 or 5 days there, we should be ready to head for home.

My one regret will be missing the fall color in Michigan?s U.P. Is there anyplace along our planned route where we might expect to find some color?
