atwood water heater leak...seal at tank drain...not the plug leaking

I'm wondering if this can be repaired with any particular sealant or if this is part of the press fitting of the drain female thread in the tank.
I've got a fairly good continuous drip. It feels almost like a foam seal and I can see that it apprears to be cracked / separating from the female threaded insert entering the tank. there is no water drip from the plug when inserted...it comes from and you can feel the seal at the tank is wet.
