TT and an elect current?
« on: September 10, 2012, 07:30:47 PM »
Hey all,

So My tt is at home hooked up to the house electric.  My wife says she feels a current or small charge at the  door frame.  Not  a static charge like when you leave your car, but a current.  Then my son says he feels it too.  I can't feel anything.  So I do a test and unplug.  And test them, and they can tell when it is un plugged.  And then when I plug back in.????  I sitll can't tell squat.  Is this unusal?  A danger perhaps?  Common?

Yes, This is unusual and should be checked out. Assuming your house outlet is ok, check your cord and then TT for leakage to ground. I had this happen to me about ten years ago, in my case it was a pinched wire going to the AC that had broken insulation.

Assuming your house current is okay is not a particularly good start.  You can get simple little testers at places like Home Depot that will verify that.  I recommend you get one.  Once that's verified then proceed with mjl2022's recommendation.

In answer to your question, it is not usual and it is dangerous.  It suggests current leakage which, though not very harmful at this stage, could become lethal.  The shock/tingle your wife and son feel, and the fact that you do not could be simply the type of shoes you have on and just how moist your skin is.  I wouldn't recommend you try it, but if you were barefoot and the ground wet I suspect you would feel it...a lot!

If everything is proper (3 prong round one grounded and connected to chassis) this should not be possible save in very unique conditions (Which by the way are responsible for the need for the 3rd wire ground).

You have a serious problem.

Recommendation one is get one of those 3 light outlet checkers and plug first into the same outlet you are connected to at the house (unplug if needed, use adapter if needed) and then into an outlet in the RV and report indications.

Thanks.  I have a friend who is an electrician.  I'll have him take a look.

Ah yes.. I often tell folks to "Seek professional help".

You need to ask your friend a few questions though, because this kind of thing can pop up when you least expect it and when he's not around.. If you know how to diagnose (you may or may not wish to try to fix, but it really helps if you know how to diagnose) it can save a lot of hair pulling.
