Skylight Leak/Roof Damage
« on: September 16, 2012, 02:54:37 PM »
Sooooo i found a leak inside coming from my skylight over the shower.  When i removed the skylight i found that the Luan under the EDPM roofing has been wet for quite some time and has rotted.

This rot looks to go back under the EDPM about 2' to the rear and about 6" above towards the center-line of the roof.

I was thinking i could slice the EDPM Horizontally just above the bend in the roof to the side & about 1' past the rot to the rear and slowly peal it towards the center-line.  Then this will allow me to replace the rotted Luan & coat the exposed steel roof beams with anti-rust stuff.

Then re-glue down the EDPM and seal the seams with the seam tape from http://www.epdmcoatings.com/rv_roof_repair.html or Eterna bond - and use one of good roof coatings.

I am thinking this will be a good Temp repair until i can afford a new EDPM roof.

It also looks like the only thing the Skylight is screwed into is the Luan - as this is only 1/4" thick - I would also beef that up to 1/2 or 3/4" for a better attachment area for the screws.

If anyone has any other ideas or experience in this area - would be glad to hear them.

Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan to me. There is no need to replace the EPDM itself unless it is worn through. You could also replace just that one section if the rest of the EPDM is OK.

We ran into the same kind of water damage when we reroofed the RV, see details in the REROOF link below.  Certainly you can peel back the EPDM, repair the damaged area, reglue & reapply the EPDM and use Eternabond along the edges of the patch.
