FMCA Indio Rally Jan.9-13

FMCA RALLY INDIO, January 9-13

We have signed up for the Indio rally. Handicap area with electrical.
Who else will be there?. We plan to arrive Jan. 7 or 8.
After the event we plan to go to Anza Borego and Quartzsite. Our Health and Physical time clock is running faster and faster and we are closing in to our 80Th. and 79 Th. B'Day and 55 Th. Anniversary. So we thought this trip would be a good time to say Good Bye to the motorhome and off road life style adventures and say hello and good bye to our old and new friends

Since we are playing the Dr. game, we will miss you.  Best wishes on a good trip and a great farewell!!  BTW, we are in the 80/79 year game too but hope to come out of our current problems and be able to RV for a few more years.  Time will tell.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for wishing us a good trip. By the way we go a long way back. We had our first communication on CompuServe in 1994-or 1995. We had a Dolphin and were going to a big RV show in Pomona. Overthere we met Frank and Barbara Barbieri (spelling) with there Dolphin Toyota.
Hope you and Pat are doing well with your medical problems and if you going South there may be time for a mini rally. Any way I like your positive attitude to keep going on with RV ing

Chris,

Sheila and I will be there along with the same group that was there last year.

BTW, we joined the forum (Compuserve) in 1993 and met our first fellow forum (Ian Macintosh) at the Fryeburg, ME FMCA rally to commemorate the beginning of FMCA at Hinkley, ME in June 1994. In September 94 we met Joe Lacey and Gary Lee at the Hersey RV show. Time sure does fly by!!

Look forward to seeing you both again ay Indio.

Jeff,

Chris can say that every year. We're just glad to see them again!

When they do "hang up" the keys, we'll all just have to go visit them at home. They won't get away from us that easily.

We'll be there, too, either in the handicap electric section or the regular electric section. Probably spend a couPle of days before at Fantasy Springs casino (Gordon likes the big field).

Chris,

We're skipping the Indio FMCA Rally this year but we hope to see you two at Quartzsite in January.  Would you please be sure to bring that vacuum cleaner with you again?  You never know when a certain someone might have another fire extinguisher 'accident'.

Chris, you should try the Bakersfield RV Resort for a change; Just a little further south on Hwy 99. We tried it at the recommendation of Marsha and Tim, and it's a nice place. Also got discounts. If you decide to try it, let me know, and I'll send you the easy way to get there.

Sorry we won't be with you this January; One of the kids and her family are moving to Ohio, so Chris is driving out there with them after Christmas. I'll fly and meet them there, and stay for a while (we have other kids and grandkids in the area).

Hi Tom,

We like the overnight one night stop at the Orange Grove and if we fall behind the time schedule we overnight at Cummings. We always like and take the Tehachapi rather then the Grape Vine. It's an easy way in and out of the Hwy. As a benefit there still may be some oranges on the trees . It's also convenient to fill up our 55 gallon LPG tank. I have never had a traffic delay on the Tehapachi.
Wish you and Chris a good trip to Ohio and it's nice to spend Christmas and NewYear with the family.

Chris,

We had hoped to be there, especially since we heard you and Mimi might attend, but shoulder surgery in Yuma will keep us from attending. We really miss seeing you since our trip to Northern CA and our visit when you were near Tom & Chris. Really happy to see you are on the road again!!! :) :) I hope we can meet somewhere down the road.

HI Jim and Pat.

It's been a long time seen we have seen you and one of the highlights of this trip for us would be seeing you again. Our first encounter was at the FMCA rally in New Mexico you and Fred were staying close to Ed Judges house. Than we had our first QZ rallies in 1997 at the ranger station and Fred climbing in the telephone pole trying to make connections with the outside world :) we then met at Moab doing the Chicken trip and had the most hilarious happy our entertainment performance and a great job don by you on your Doodle Doodle thing and the creative job from chris and Betty to have you properly dressed.

Well anyway we are not going to miss you and have plan B . If you can't make it to Indio or QZ, we will take some time off from AB or QZ and visit you in Yuma.

Wendy - We left our bikes home this year so decided to skip Indio too.  How's Mike doing, better we hope.  Can't imagine seeing him without that big Coke mug in his hand.   ;D

Chris - I'm not touching the fire extinguisher this year!  In fact, I think I'll duct tape it to the wall just to be safe!  :-[

If you haven't looked at the QZ rally thread lately, we will be coming to Indio! Made the reservations today so you won't have to come to Yuma. I don't need an operation after all, just the old Arthur's Idis and Mr. Bursitis.  ;D ;D

There is the  Palm Canyon hike and Hell Hole Canyon and I can't recall the  name of the  one that  they take only going down.  I  drop them off at the top and they  hike to bottom.  Maybe one of them will recall.

Wendy,

Betty mentioned a couple of the hikes but the one Terry really likes is off S22. Usually the ladies will drive us near the top of S22 and we hike back down the mountain to the parking lot that is on the right as you turn left on the west side of Borrego Springs. About half way down there was a cactus garden naturally planted. Lots of different cacti. Haven't done the hike in a few years so I don't know if it's the same. The hike is tough on the feet but what a view!

I think Jerry & Ardra want to do the hike as well.

Does FMCA take walk-ins?  One of our major transmitter sites is in Indio and I go there regularly, so it would be easy for me to come to the rally.  But I'll be sleeping in the Motel6 because I need the company's 4x4 to get up to the site and it won't tow behind my motorhome.

Yes Lou

You can get a day pass, and include the seeings entertainment. Or you can get a full pass for around $80 bucks. ( I think)  Or if you just want to walk in  ( drive ) for just happy hour, there no fee for that after 4:00.

Passport for one adult is $65. Gets you everything except motorhome parking. The schedule is now available online at http://www.fmca.com/images/stories/pdf/areas/wea13_ataglance.pdf.

I'm sure there will be enough cars available. In the past Pat & Betty have dropped us off and we left one car at the bottom. As long as they have a way to get around there's no problem.  :) Looking forward to the hike and hoping I can still do it.  :D

And so  the  Indio FMCA Western Area Rally begins.  Ten of us had dinner tonight at Spotlight  29 Casino.  Russ stayed in his rig,  sparing us of his  cold.  Jeff  will lead us into the  rally area in Indio at 9 am in the morning. We miss Sue but we like Jeff's friend  Al.  It is the first time in a long time  I have made this step of the rally, having  stayed at "home" for a few extra days prior to rally start. What fun!

Well  the  group of  6  rigs caravanned with ease  into the  FMCA rally today.
We are set up in the  Blue lot 1st street. We are right along the  fence on grass/dirt with  Oasis street right behind us.  Lots of space between our rigs.  It will be fine here unless it rains.  This is a very different spot than we have been before.  The fun has begun.

There were two RVs with dog pens setup last night at Spotlight 29 casino.

You're not in Orange ? Wow, that's different. Where did the handicapped end up ? Grass would be nice  We'll pray for fair weather so you don't get stuck !

Parking lots are not the place for dog pens but some dog owners think they're special and give us all a bad name.

Liza, We think the area beside  Jeff's coach in Blue Lot Row 1 has the most space for a large circle of chairs.   Bring yours down  and we'll gather at  4pm . Now we have not yet asked Jeff if this is ok but he is always up for a gathering!

I saw Betty's coach this a.m. while walking Gordon. I assume that Jeff's is close by (haven't seen the new one yet). I think we'll eat a big lunch so I don't have to worry about fixing dinner between Happy Hour and Bingo. Or I may just fix the "Muffin-Top-Banishing Bean Burgers" they're fixing on Today.

Jerry and Ardra arrived yesterday at the rally site in time to see everyone at the end of happy hour, but after the photo was taken.  We're in Gold YELLOW Lot (the row of double palms) in the first site next to Gate 6.  We picked up our packet this a.m. and are figuring out what we want to see and/or do.

The wind has really picked up and dust is blowing so visibility is so bad we can't see the mountains.  Jerry's been out doing his good deed by giving breathing masks to some of the people who have to work outside.  The lady at Gate 6 put hers on immediately and is still wearing it.  No sense breathing the dust if you don't have to do so!

Wendy - Sorry we missed your milestone celebration (not to mention the yummy ribs).  Hope you have a wonderful seventh decade!  ;)

Terry's weather machine captured wind speeds of  33mph!  Trash all over,  dirt in air!  Announcements were made during seminars about awnings (if  out should be pulled in.) 30% of room vacated.  Now who comes to the desert and leaves with their awning out? Mats blowing  around.

We are hoping the 4 pm parade is  cancelled so we do not have to endure this misery outside.  Or better yet we are hoping the wind quits!  It is rough on those vendors who have outside eating booths.  Food blows right off plates.  Not a good thing for business. We are tucked  cozily inside our motorhome having  lunch.  Life continues  to be good.

Assuming the parade is on, where do you plan on sitting to watch it?  We're right on the route (next to Gate 6 in the Yellow Lot) and it's cement in front of us if you don't another another place planned.  Ten minutes ago the mountains were clear and now I can't see them again.  The palm trees over by the exhibits look just like the flags - flattened and blowing straight out!

True to his party self, Jeff came  next door to our  coach at 4 pm and announced in lieu of the cancelled  parade the RVForum group would have a happy hour.  (I think he knew  Randy was  was bringing red wine.)   Jerry and Ardra tried to call me but because it is polite to silence your phones during seminars, my  phone took a message. They showed up anyway!  Pat D, still recovering from  a hacking cold, took a nap.  We tried knocking on their door and since there was no answer, we  decided  she needed the rest! Russ declined the phone call invitation citing "he does not feel well enough."Party animals, Ray and  Liza showed up in anticipation of an event and  despite having to wait in their car until something happened, had a good time after a visit to  Randy and Debbie's  RV. No one told us they were next door!

Prior to the Happy hour, Terry and Ken assisted  Chris in getting  TV reception ( despite the fact they  are parked under  a concrete auditorium). They were successful in getting Chris and Mimi TV  but Chris and Mimi need to recover from a series  of recent events in order to attend Happy hour or  dinner out!   I'm sure they will be  100% by   tomorrow!

I have never been to  an RVForum Rally where so many  people in our group  were so sick.  Hacking, coughing aches and fortitude is  the  norm! Barb and Frank were no shows, considering her condition on a drive by visit yesterday that was a good idea. Jerry  F has no symptoms. (yet)  I feel pretty well but the dizzy spells must mean an inner ear something.  Where were  Mike and Wendy and  Bernie and Marlene?  No clues? Probably smart to stay warm in their rigs! Got a cal from Bill and Corinne.  Stay tuned for their visit!

What a rally.  It was 53  degrees during our Happy Hour and yet we had a wonderful time!  Who can tell others about this RV lifestyle?  Wuss by Wuss folks disappeared  to go home for dinner and we will meet up at 6:30 to head for the evening entertainment. No photos from me.  Ya had to be here!

I just arrived in Indio, a day behind schedule.  Spent yesterday and this morning at our Mojave transmitter.  It's on the valley floor where Hwy 58 leaves the Tehachapi Mtns, and when I got there at 9 this morning it was 31 degrees and a there was a solid curtain of white at the foot of the Tehachapi canyon.  In spite of a 40-50 MPH wind, as soon as it hit the valley floor it dispersed into nothingness, so at the tower it was clear, cold and windy.  A mile to the west there was snow coming down and on the ground.

Anyway, I have a little work to make up tomorrow morning then I'm available for the rest of Friday and Saturday.  I'm hoping to get a day pass to come to the Rallye on Saturday - do I need a pass to show up for happy hour tomorrow?   Or will there be a Happy Hour tomorrow?

Sounds like everyone is having fun.  Hopefully you all are warm.  This morning we woke to a couple of inches of snow and it is not getting above the low 40s with the lows down in the mid 20s....burr.  The motorhome is sitting out in front of the house where we are sanding and re-varnishing all the inside wood; having to run the heat just to get the varnish to dry.  This has been a really cold winter.

Keeping my fingers crossed the weather in Quartzsite is warmer.

While  Happy Hour was well attended, again we froze our toes! ( and more)   Bill and Corinne showed up a bit late due to traffic  while getting to Indio.  Lou Schneider called and was stuck up on a mountain, but hopes to be in tomorrow. Pat and Debbie showed off their  new  shirts they  got as a "2 for deal."  Ray told how lucky he was to have his F number selected and his winning prize was 40% discount on  something he had just purchased, so he got an $800 credit on his credit card! What luck. Many  Folks are still sniffling, coughing and aching.  I am still well but pacing myself.  Barb and Frank drove in but were so bundled up we hardly recognized them.

Jeff announced a group is going to  Augustine Casino for the  all you can eat Buffet tomorrow Saturday.  I can't recall what time he said to meet by his coach so  folks who want to go can car pool over.  I guess it is a beautiful buffet with seafood,  and prime rib?

Igor's Jazz  Cowboys  entertained us tonight.  They were great combination of Western, Dixie and Swing with a Jazz twist music. The  mandolin was my favorite instrument.

We ran home because it was so cold. 45 degrees.

It was 54 in our coach when we got back from the entertainment. Turns out the guys who did the windshield had a side window open passing equipment in and out and it didn't get shut. Gordon was all curled up in the pillows on the bed.

For those here in Indio who are cold, I'd like to point out that the current temperature in Moab (4:45 MST) is NINE. And at my house in Cortez, the temperature is 11, headed to a predicted low of -12. It's all relative.

Yes, cheer up!  It is currently 3 F and tonight is expected to be -8.  Tomorrow may get to 8 again and a low of -4.  We have been below freezing except for a few days in the low 30s since late November.

Wish we could have made it to cold QZ!    :)

Makes our 56 degrees with a low tonight of 34 in Indio look positively balmy :)

We're sitting in our coach watching the Denver game AND watching the parade out our windshield. Life is good.

I'm glad I was finally able to make it to the rally - it was good seeing everyone at the parade.

Ray and Liza - thanks for the food coupons.  I caught the BBQ guy just as he was closing up and he piled my plate so high with BBQ chicken that I had to bring most of it home.   I probably have two more meals in the refrigerator.

Wendy and Mike - I saw your yellow VW and decorated coach first, but I'm sorry I wasn't able to meet up with you.  I was watching the parade from the other end with the rest of the group.

Anyway, I'm back in Van Nuys and getting ready to go into work in the morning.

And that's why we are in Indio and not Moab or Cortez ;D

The Big Top Parade Theme was a hit.  It was one of the most creative and fun parades ever despite  having only 8 floats.  They threw popcorn , peanuts and candy.  RVForum member scrambled to get their goodies, especially Mimi!

There was a crowd who ventured out early to the Augustino Casino seafood buffet and we await the report on that meal.

Elton John/Billy Joel (look alike) entertainers performed renditions of popular songs and wowed the audience.  In the morning  we head in different directions but with a promise to return to the Indio Western Area rally next year.
