Since the original doubleback discussion was stale, I started a new thread...

Because VW chose not to import its newest (in 2002) 5th generation van to the USA and Canada, (Mexico gets imported commercial & passenger versions) chances that we'd ever encounter a Doubleback are slim to none, and of course it would be illegal to own one unless you want to wait 25 years. <G>

VW produces its campers in house these days, and the unit isn't exactly cheap, even in its home market.  I just priced it out and according to the German websitete, $43,000 for a basic popup and $72,000 for the full camper.  And that's the models' basic power trains without options and VAT.

I guess we're gonna hang onto our '89 Westy &'66 Kombi for the time being. (skipped a generation)

Was the Doubleback the van that VW sold in the 90's and early 2000's (right before the Chrysler sourced model)? I've always wanted a VW Westfalia.  I saw a 70's Westie in great shape at a campground while camping in MD last year.  The nice thing about them was that they had everything you needed, were fun to drive and got decent gas mileage compared to today's RV's.  Now, if the most recent model that is not available in the US costs in the 70's, you might as well get a decent class C RV.

This is the latest doubleback we have in Europe.

Looks great, shame you can only transport 3 people at a time though.

No, the Doubleback is built on the 5th generation VW chassis, which is not marketed in the US.  The 4th generation VW van sold in the USA was known as the Eurovan.  This model was made between 1992 and 2003.

Am I a Vanagon or Eurovan person?  http://www.gowesty.com/library_article.php?id=98
