I've shot for 30 years and have a fascination for macro and bug photography. In the summer I run a thread on dpreview call the weekly close up where people show off their close ups. In the winter it has a different host because I have nothing to shoot unless I go down to the tropics. Last week we were in Costa Rica and I was in bug heaven.

Very cool Jim.  Hope you don't mind me adding a couple of mine.  I don't have a Macro lens yet, just a zoom.  This is what I'm able to do with that...a noisy Texas Cicada and a Gecko out sunning:

Thank you Ed. I'm a bit rusty after not shooting since a hood fell on my arm last year. Still a bit shaky and slow to remember settings. Still we carried the full sized rigs for up to 5 hours at a stretch without pain, so I'm happy even if not all my shots came out.

I don't mind at all Ed. I love seeing others critters too and seem to be fascinated by the cicadas face features which I wasn't able to get as good of shot as you did.

The cicada I shot was much smaller than I had expected, maybe a inch or so long and shot at 2x life. I did use a  50-200 zoom and 2x converter for many of my shots because getting close to them wasn't always a option.

Thanks Jim.  I used a 28-300 Tamron Zoom on my Nikon D-5000.  The insect critters can be pretty interesting close-up.

Ed

You might consider a quality close up filter as a way to get more into macro without breaking the bank. They are inexpensive and light weight, going on the end of the lens and shortening the minimum focusing distance. Over the years I have seen many many excellent images taken with them.
