Our First Long Trip - Massachusetts to Cape Hatteras, NC

We are excitedly preparing for the first long trip in our new travel trailer purchased April 2012. We enjoyed local camping last year which gave us chance to work out the bugs and get accustomed to life in 21.5 feet. Our trip will be a month long, leaving the third week in April from Plymouth, MA, and returning Memorial weekend. We will be meandering our way down through New England to NY (Westpoint) for a wedding and checking out the area, heading over through PA thru Hershey and to Millpond to visit Falling Waters - the famous Frank Lloyd Wright house which is on my bucket list, down though MD (to visit my family) and DC, to Virginia Beach and then Cape Hatteras, which is our farthest point south. I would have loved to travel further, but with limited time and having to then travel back up north, there is no way we can do it without rushing. And, we do have several stops and visiting friends planned on the way back home. For most of our trip we will be staying at campgrounds or state parks, but there will be a few places we are staying where we will be on our own. For those places my husband has purchased a portable generator. (We will get really good use out of it because we love to go to the casinos in CT and now we will be able to stay longer.)
I have all my reservations and hopefully, we will be able to stick to our timeline. I have really limited each leg of travel
so that we are not driving more than 4-5 hours and we will be doing that only a few times; most of it will be less.
I am setting up a binder with plastic inserts to organize the trip. I have my reservation confirmations, maps, information about the areas and any information I may need, in this binder.  It will be a great memory of the trip afterwards too. Well - the countdown has begun! Lots to do and I welcome any suggestions or comments or tips about extended travel or the areas we are going to. Thanks! The Lorings

You guys are having too much fun. That should be a great trip but we would give NYC  a wide berth.

Sounds like a great trip!  Safe travels and enjoy all the interesting places along the way.  it's all about the journey!!

We typically park at the beach (ocean city, md) for the saeason but I wouldn't mind getting back to Nags Head and points south.

As a native New Yorker from Brooklyn - I am all too familiar with NYC and traffic - however - one of our stops on the way home is going to be a park at Liberty Harbor, NJ. Our friends live on Staten Island and that is the closest spot.
This park (more of just parking) has a great location overlooking the harbor and some nice amenities. In MD, we are staying in College Park - as that is the closest to my mother - who lives in Silver Spring. This place has good access to DC as well. My husband will be doing all the driving and I will be sitting shotgun, with all the maps and details. As an office manager and company facilitator, that's what I'm really good at. Anyway, I am looking forward to reviewing all the parks we visit; I found in choosing places to stay, other peoples reviews were so helpful. Last night, I started making my lists to go in my binder. Boy - I have a lot of them!

The draw bridge on US 64 going across the Aligator River in Dare Co. will be closed for repairs in April , There are no quick alternate routes. Beachgoers should prepare for a longer slog that will add at least 30 miles to the journey.

Thanks for the tip. We won't be there until the second week of May - so hopefully, they will be done by then.
