Can anyone confirm or deny if a digital tachometer/speedometer registers the driven (towed) miles on a toad - with the engine off obviously.

Generally, a digital odometer won't register miles if the ignition isn't on.  Nor would a tachometer or speedometer work.

When we first towed our Suburban it registered towed miles, even with the key out. When we subsequently had it in a dealership for an unrelated dash issue, I asked if there was a way to prevent towed mileage recording. I don't know what the dealer did, but it subsequently didn't record mileage when towed behind our motohome. By then, the Burb had racked up over 10,000 towed miles  :(

Answer varies car to car, however on the ones where it does,,,,, Usually a fuse disables it. you can remove the fuse, install a simple adapter (Cost about 50 bucks can make one for way less) and put the fuse back in (the adapter) instant on/off switch.
