Palmer to Valdez and beyond

Ned and I left Palmer on Thursday for a very pleasant and beautiful drive to Glennallen where we spent two nights at Northern Lights. Yesterday we drove to Chitina after stopping at the visitor centers in Glennallen and Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve. Today we drove to Valdez which is probably the most awesome and beautiful drive yet on this trip. It is like a little Switzerland on the way here and in Valdez with mountains all around the Valdez Inlet. This was a Wow drive. We are parked on the inlet right at the boat channel and have a view of at least six glaciers. Tomorrow we will take a boat trip to Columbia Glacier. The weather has been partly cloudy and sunny all three days. For more detail about our trip check our blog. Enjoying your travels. Great pics. Keep it all coming. This is probably the only way I'll ever be able to enjoy Alaska, espeially after seeing the cost breakdowns from several of you Alaska travelers!!

We can put all the photos on a CD (maybe a DVD) for you this winter

The best are at our photo gallery, however. These are just a taste. If all of us posted all our photos, we'd fill up Tom's server.

Today was probably the best boat tour we've taken. Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Black bear, Puffins, Bald Eagles, glaciers, ice bergs and some of the most beautiful scenery.

Today was another clear and sunny day in Valdez so Ned and I went to breakfast with John and Jane, then said our goodbys since we won't see them until Kerrville, TX at the Motosat rally. We finished up a few things such as laundry and grocery shopping because we will be leaving in the morning for Delta Junction. Since the Tok cutoff hasn't improved and the Richardson Hwy to Delta Junction is suppose to be more scenic and better road we decided to go that way. This afternoon we went to see three different museums, Old Valdez Annex, Valdez Musuem and the Whitney Museum. All of them are excellent, the first one having a hour movie of the 1964 earthquake and a model layout of the old city. The second one had more of the history of Valdez and the third one has one of the largest collections of native Alaskan carvings, crafts, tools, clothing and toys in Alaska. That one, especially, is a WOW museum even Ned enjoyed it. Our stay here has been very enjoyable and highly recommend it as a stop when coming to Alaska. The pictures are from the last two museums. Yesterday we left Valdez with overcast skies but after the Thompson Pass the weather cleared and we had sunny skies all the way to Delta Junction. The Tok cutoff was reported still in bad shape so we decided to do the Richardson to DJ. Today we will go to breakfast and then wait for Frank and Barb coming down from Fairbanks and then head for Tok for one night.

I wonder how many Bridal Veil Falls there are? Niagara Falls, Yosemite, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI, Chiiwack BC, Gold Bar WA, Colorado Springs, CO, Spearfish SD, and Columbia River Gorge, OR are some that we have seen.

Don't forget Telluride CO (awesome in spring), one in Glenwood Springs CO (do we have more than our share here in Colorado?), and I believe there's one we hiked to once up Provo Canyon in Utah.

Kind of a fun thing to collect.....waterfalls named Bridal Veil Falls.

Today we traveled from Tok, AK to Destruction Bay, Yukon with no problems at Canadian Customs. The road was a different story with lots of frost heaves which made for a very tiring day. Frank and Barb W. followed the bouncing bike on the back of our car to know when to brake

Hopefully tomorrow the road to Haines will be better but no guarantees and we will see if they give us any trouble getting back into the US. No pictures from today (still in the camera) but there are new ones of Valdez on our blog. Still have a some from our boat trip in Valdez and the Richardson Hwy to get ready for posting hopefully in the next day or two. Just having too much fun and days of traveling

Yesterday Frank, Barb and us drove from Destruction Bay to Haines on very good highway with about 6 miles of construction.

Even the construction wasn't bad except that it was muddy from the rain we had all night and yesterday

? We were able to see some of the scenery at the lower elevations.? Hopefully today it is suppose to clear but until it does we will probably go to several museums and the visitor center.? Last evening we drove out to the end of the bay pass the Alaska Marine dock to see many eagles and several grizzly bears.? That was rather exciting since the only place we have seen grizzlies was at Denali.? A couple of them were up close and personal.
