      Following the recent string about National Parks, I got to thinking when UNESCO just added Newfoundland's RED Bay, a 16th century Basque whaling site to the list.  A quick Google revealed the following 2 links, one for Canada and the other USA.  They are impressive lists, a lot of which Donna and I have had the pleasure of visiting, but many we haven't:

We visited Red Bay's World Heritage Site and loved it.  So very interesting!  We just didn't realize the Basque whalers were the first "real" settlers in the new world (the Vikings were much earlier).  And the site was fascinating.  Going to Labrador overnight is worth it if people are going up to L'Anse Meadows (another World Heritage Site) and St. Anthony's.  We also visited a whale museum in Red Bay where two teenage girls were docents.  We had a very interesting conversation with them.  BUT that's also where I had such bad biting fly bites - take repellant, Benedryl and cover up if you go!
