The VHF radio on our RIB dinghy quit working. It was an Aurora (private label) sold by West Marine that has been on several of our boats for approx 25 years.

Researching a replacement, curiosity had me headed to amazon.com. They had several inexpensive fixed VHF radios, and I opted for a Cobra. I've never owned any Cobra products before, so this will be an interesting experiment.

Any of the newer VHF's should be great for that installation. I am partial to ICOM units. Please, Please, Please make sure it has DSC functions. You may never use them but if there is an emergency and you find yourself in the dingy, the DCS distress button will be a lifesaver.

I too like Icom products, and use them in different situations, including a handheld.

I wasn't specifically looking for DSC capabilities, but the Cobra has it.
