Feeling uncomfortable while parking at Walmart in Kansas City!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing!

Is there any sort of directory or reference to good and reasonably safe places.... or even one that lists which walmarts allow it.... which Cracker Barrels, which track stops are good.....etc....  How do you go about finding a store that allows it?

I don't know of any reference that tells you that.  Cracker Barrel has a brochure of all their locations.  The Next Exit lists all the Cracker Barrels, Wal-Marts and such that are close to an interstate highway.  If the place is suitable for large vehicles (e.g. RVs) the name is printed in red.  That means it's an RV-friendly place so there's a good chance they might allow overnight RV parking.  BUT (there's always one of those) the only way you'll know for sure is to ask at that specific location.  Even though Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel tend to RV-friendly, some communities have ordinances restricting overnight parking in places other than a campground.  In that case the retail establishment might like to accommodate overnight RVers but cannot encourage you to do so.  With all the thousands of retailers in this country, it would be hard to pin them down on such a policy that could then be printed in a book or online database.  Then there's the local crime which can vary from one year to the next because there's little crime when the economy is good but it rises when the economy tanks.  As to truck stops, when you read or hear on TV about some of the stuff that happens in their parking lots, I wonder if any would be safe for overnight stops.  I'm not saying these places are unsafe, but there's just no way to tell other than to observe what's happening in your surroundings and decide where you feel safe staying there.  Every one of us needs to be street smart when we're traveling.

Poor choice of words.  Perhaps I should have said "less crime" vs. "more crime" and we've seen it in a number of places both in the USA and other countries.

Yahoo groups has a WalMart forum for overnight parking.  In their file section are lists that are kept up to date pretty well.

We've stayed a number of WalMarts during our travels.  All have been 24 hour stores.  In New England and upstate NY, open campgrounds a hard to find in November and April.  I'm not going to drive 50 miles each way to a campground that is open  to pay for a site where I won't even hook up.

Major department stores often get a lot of police traffic,, True story follows.

But if you feel uncomfortable.. park elsewhere....

The story:
Store security (K-mart 4065) Catches a shoplifter, buzzes the fuzz (Battle Creek, MI, City Police) and a patrol car and officer come by to take 'me off to the hotel for retired shoplifters... AS the security chief is escorting the officer and his client out of the store he spots another shoplifter in the ace,  Nails him as he turns around to re-enter the store, calls the PD from the service desk just inside the doors;..

Dispatcher: You got another already, The last officer has not gotten back to the station with the last one.
Security: Gotten back, He's still in our parking lot.

Like I said, A LOT of police presence.

I usually keep an AK47 or AR15 in my RV and a .45 in the console beside me (I have a ccw) and I have yet to feel uncomfortable anywhere :)

Ya, me to and also a CCW.  But I have guns mainly for target shooting while in Florida.  We are locked inside our motorhome when sleeping anywhere.  The keys are in the ignition.  All I need is time to get the engine started and make our exit.  Never, ever had a problem.
