HELP ! Duo therm 57915 a/c only works for short time!
« on: July 17, 2013, 11:33:08 PM »
Hello.

I have a 2001 Starcraft 26rks fifth wheel. With a duo therm
57915 a/c unit. The problem I'm having is that when I plug
Into shore power the a/c unit only works for about four hours
Then quits and than nothing until I get to the next camp site
And same thing. I thought it might be the wall thermostat. So
I did the digital thermostat conversion. Worked get  I left again
For four hours came back nothing. Fan won't even turn on. So
What I check next? Thanks for any help

Maybe it's freezing up? Do you clean the filter regularly? Have you ever cleaned the inside coils? A lot of dust bypasses the filter and clogs up the evaporator coils causing it ti freeze. If it freezes up, the thermistor will cut the unit off.

Full timing and loving it!

Enjoy life now.
It has an expiration date.

Interesting. I see two problems: (1) it shuts off and (2) it won't reset until you unplug from shore power and move on. For #2, have you tried turning the a/c circuitbreaker off and back on again, to see it it will restart? Or unplugged from shore power and then re-plugged?  You might have to wait 10-15 minutes before turning back on, though. It would be an interesting experiment to see if this gets it going again without driving to another campsite.

For #1, I suspect either a freeze-up (there is a sensor on the coils for that) or some kind of internal thermal overload. Maybe even a circuit board that gets too hot and one of its integrated circuits fails. That should self-correct after a few hours of cooling, though. Might even take overnight on a hot day. Re the freeze-up possibility, I think the fans would continue to run if that were it, but I don't know the Duotherm design well enough to be sure of that.

    To Gary ,

Yes those are the problems. I have tried the circuit breaker
and unplugging the shore power(only for a minute) and still nothing
Also if I just switch it to fan only,I get nothing. So if it freezes up the
Fan should still work? Maybe not if its protected too. I've looked
in from the inside with cover off looks alittle dirty, went outside
Looked from the back side and the back of the coil looks kinda
beat up maybe from a hail storm. Can't do anything right now
because everyone is still sleeping. And I don't have a ladder at the
campsite we are at. But that is my plan today is atleast vacuum out
The lower portion and try to get to the top(hopefully) any other ideas
Will be help full. Thanks for the guidance it sure helping Kelly

HOLY CATS! I need a vacation from my vacation. The circuit
Breaker was TRIPPED! Oh boy. Anyway there is still a reason
Why it tripped so I'm going have to hunt that down and still
do the maintaince on it cuz it might still be freezing up if (we were
Gone when it happened)
. This is are first fifth wheel and first week long vacation
with it so I'm still finding problems as the trip goes on but
I'm down to the a/ c . Thanks for all the help and I will keep
