I checked the library and didn't see any articles that might help. I have an old class c rv. We have discovered many problems from needing a new engine to various leeks. One thing remains that isn't hooked up and that is the water heater. It has been bypassed. What would be the best/easiest way to check it out?

The old fashioned way: put some water in and see if it leaks. First static, then under city water pressure.  Finally, turn on the power source and see if it heats up.

What make and model water heater is it? Does it have an  engine assist (typically called "Motor-aid")? Propane only or propane plus electric?

As Gary said, Make and Model of the water heater?? That will reveal "everything". There is usually a sticker with this information on the side of the housing behind the metal door located on the outside of the MH .

If you can't find the model information sticker on the exterior side of the heater, how about a picture? We can often recognize them, or at least the two main brands (Atwood & Suburban). American was also a water heater supplier back in the day.

Water heaters are pretty simple, so the best course of action is to proceed with a basic function check and see what symptoms there may be. Leaks are typically in attached plumbing rather than the tank itself, but you never know til you try.

There are several articles in the RV Forum Library on water heaters. They deal mostly with newer gas/electric  DSI heaters, but the LP gas mode basics are pretty much the same. Here are three of the major ones:
