An evening with Kanile'a Ukulele
« on: July 26, 2013, 01:18:29 AM »
We were invited to spend the evening with Hawaiian-born Joe and Kristen Sousa, owners of Kanile'a Ukuleles of Hawaii. What a fascinating insight into how they build their unique ukuleles. Joe's slideshow/presentation was accompanied by physical samples of the various parts of a uke in various stages of the manufacturing process passed around attendees. They also had samples of the finished product.

The invitation came from the owners of Lamorinda Music in Lafayette, my favorite music store, and the venue for this evening's event.

For folks who don't wish to spend $1,000 - $2,000 on a Kanile'a ukulele, the Souzas introduced their more affordable Islander line, priced in the $150 - $500 range.

Joe taught us how to play 'Kainoa' and the variations that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (IZ) introduced into his solo rendition. Concluding the evening, Kristen performed an interesting hula, accompanied by Joe on the uke.

I got to spend time with both Joe and Kristen separately ahead of their presentation; Delightful folks who willingly shared information about their company and their dealer selection process.
