I have a 1985 journey motor home. My dash vent blows out warm air. I am told I need new cable it is kinked some where in the line so I cannot close the vent completely. Can I still get this cable that controls the heat and AC?

Or, at that age, maybe it needs a charge (more Freon).  We just had ours done a couple of months ago and it made a big difference.  We know we have a slow leak and eventually will have to replace a part, but for now it's putting out lots of cold air.  If it's blowing air, even hot, that doesn't seem like a kink in the line or there would be no air blowing out.

Didn't know they made a Journey in 1985, but I too think it might be a freon problem and not linkage.
Could also be a vacuum leak which doesn't let the controls function.

Welcome Jim.  Depends on who made your dash air components.  SCS Frigette who made the dash air parts for our Horizon went bankrupt a few years ago.  I would take your Journey to an AC shop or a truck shop that has the capability to work on AC.

me neither, but I just found an 86' for sale. If it is a freon leak, good luck trying to refill it. Next to drugs, the #2 illegal import from Mexico is Freon, and you buy it the same way.... On a street corner

If it does have a leak switch it over to 134A, it'll work just fine. Just don't put too much in it. It takes less volume than 12. Most older systems weren't very tight, even when new. Try charging it up and see how long it lasts. Can you hear the doors move when you move the selector?. May have a broken vacuum line also. You should be able to see the actuator move for the doors on the right side under the dash.

There are several replacements for the old Freon called R--- which is a number designation.  We just had ours refilled with one of them.  Because of the age of the motorhome, the worst case scenario might be replacing the condenser and maybe the compressor to handle the newer substances.  You really need to talk with an air conditioning specialist.

Freon, is a name brand, not the type of refrigerant. Older auto systems had refrigerant R12, newer systems have 134A. 134A will work in a R12 system just fine. Most systems leak thru the compressor seal, not all but most. The longer a coach sits the more chance the gas will leak out because the compressor seal needs to have the oil in the system to keep it sealing. Some of the old compressors only had a single lip on the seal and even if a brand new seal was installed they wouldn't hold a good deep vacuum. Most new seals are a double lip seal and last much longer. My Corvette needs about 12 oz recharge a year, but I'm not about to replace the compressor for that. My old Itasca would need a complete recharge every year, but for what a compressor costs, I'll put a couple cans of 134a in it and be done till next year. It's ozone friendly.
