Hi there, We will be landing in Dallas Texas in end of March 2014 & will be purchasing a tow vehicle Probably 2nd hand 2011 or 2012 Dodge Ram Megacab, Turbo diesel. And a Fifth wheeler ( I know this will depend on which brand) but in general who has had a really good experience & have been fully supported by a dealer in & around Texas, it doesn't have to be in Dallas, I am willing to travel a little. We will also need to fully set up this rig from pots & pans (probably Walmart ey?) to tow hitch & what ever else is needed, if anything? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

You didn?t say in what part of the Metroplex you are staying.  I would recommend Huffines Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Lewisville or their other location in Plano. I would also recommend you check prices on used trucks. I think you will be better off buying new as the used truck market is so hot in this area. The better warranty and finance options will offset any savings in buying a 2 year old truck.
Yes Wal-Mart is probably the best place to outfit your new rig.
Hear is an incomplete list of dealers you can start browsing their inventory.

Purchased a used Class A from Vogt and would go back to them again.  Give them a look.  They are between Dallas and Ft Worth.  Not far from the airport.

Metroplex? I did mention in my OP that we would be landing in Dallas/FW. After a 20 hour flight from Perth we will be bedding down somewhere close by. If DFW area doesn't have what we're after we 'll hit the road, more than likely towards Houston. We have a cousin there & a lot of folk on other posts have recommended PPL RV.
Thanks for your links to dealers, i'll check 'em out.

Be sure and run all the weights so that you do not buy a truck that will have trouble pulling a 5 wheel.  You'll need to watch pin weights, axle weights and CGVWR (Combination gross vehicle weight rating); especially if you are going to be visiting the west.

The Dallas/Fort Worth area is called the Metroplex by folks in that area.  I can recommend PPL Motorhomes in Houston if you are going that direction.  I bought my last motorhome through them (consignment dealer) and had a good experience.

There is also a large dealer in Alvarado, Texas, which is just Southwest of Dallas/Fort Worth, called Motorhome Specialist that sells new and used motorhomes and travel trailers and 5th wheels (some on consignment).  I have no personal experience with them but have heard about their dealership.  You can check them out at www.mhsrv.com and PPL at www.ppl.com.

I would mirror the suggestion to talk to the folks at vogtrv.com if you're looking for a towable trailer.

Nice people that have been around for a long time.

I just bought a trailer from the Boerne location and highly recommend them.  Best part is we did all the negotiating through email due to my schedule.  They also have sites "in their backyard" you can stay at for the first night or two just in case you have any issues.

Hi Marsha, from the research I've done so far there are several floor plans that suit our needs for around 10,000LBS but no more than 12,000 & the TV we like is a Dodge ram 3500. Once I've short listed the FW I will check out the weights you have mentioned & run it past you guy's. We will be travelling everywhere, what do you mean by "especially if you are going to be visiting the west." Do they have weight resricyions?

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, I will look them up soon. I have heard of a few places now that let you camp on site for up to 3 nights. Cant imagine they would be kid friendly places though but hey, I guess 1 night wouldn't hurt.

No more than in the east. But in the west you have long, steep mountain grades combined with high altitude, which reduces the power available from typical gasoline engines; as much as 25% loss around 8,000 feet or so.
