Stock Wrangler sport, Prep for Moab rally????
« on: January 25, 2014, 11:05:44 PM »
Ok guys,

What should I do for prep? Thinking about a set of clevis pins for the sway bar, a recovery strap and air compressor.

Is there anything else that I really should have to have fun and run with you guys at the rally?? There is tons I would like to do but???

If you can think of anything I need or highly recommended mods I really should do, let me know. Just want to run the mild stuff like fins without options.

Thanks!!

Highlift jack, an 18" square of plywood so jack goes up instead of down, in soft soil, and a short handled spade. After that it starts costing money. :)

Fins (Fins n Things?) Is probably doable in a stock Sport, but it would be a lot more comfortable with MTR tires.

A strap and D rings for recovery is a must.  You really need to air down for a variety of reasons so an air compressor and gauge is a must.  Also a CB radio for communicating on the trail.

Should have category:

First aid kit
Tools
Spare fluids (brake, oil, transmission/power steering fluid, etc.)
Gloves
Cooler for food and water (plenty of water - stay hydrated)
Some kind of GPS
Tire repair kit

I don't carry a Hi-Lift jack anymore - those things are very dangerous and unpredictable.  I've seen too many situations where I was amazed that somebody didn't get hurt with them.  I carry a bottle jack and a 2' square piece of plywood instead - I've used this on the trail to replace a front axle and it worked very well.  However, the jack handle is valuable - it can be used to sleeve a bent tie rod.

As far as the RVForum Quartzsite runs, what  John mentioned is  spot on!  I'm glad he mentioned the CB radio because 1/2 the fun is keeping in touch with the other vehicles.  We have chatter, jokes, scenery information  going on during our rides.  We can also indicate when we need a  10-100.
We also bring chairs and lunch.
The last run we did was fairly easy, great scenery and one tricky spot that all of tour vehicles mastered even if some had  a couple of tries to "get er done."

Glad to see  you will be joining us!

OK, so, it looks like I should really invest in a CB. The rest I think I should be good on. I hope...

I am really thinking about a 2.5" lift and can easily do that prior to the rally, Tires are a big maybe, I will have to talk to me tire guy and see what kind of deal he can get me. Oh, I am getting the Evap. canister armor!!! And might have a line on a set of sliders off a mall crawler (No dings)

Forget the Hi-lift jack, get one of these, a combo jack stand & hydraulic jack...

I agree with Terry on the jack.

Rock Hard 4x4 makes an evap canister relocation bracket (http://www.rockhard4x4.com/product_p/rh-6005-a.htm) that I think may be better than the skid plate.

Also, I did a 2.5" lift, then when I put armour under the Jeep the weight took back some of the lift.  I added 3" springs to solve the problem.  You might want to think about a 3" lift to start with.

I got a quote on a 3.5" leveling kit $800 installed. I can't remember the brand but it is one of the better ones. seems like a nice kit, I will post the brand when I can remember for you guys to approve!  :) Edit: 3.5" rough country II leveling kit.

Terry, that jack looks like it will fit the bill, Thanks

John, I assume the stock tow hooks are out of the question, I'm looking for a front bumper that will still allow my Blue ox Base plate. Leaning toward something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-JK-Wrangler-Front-Bumper-01-Crawler-w-Winch-Plate-Steel-Stinger-KO-Off-Road-/201027644121?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ece2e6ad9

What do you think?

As far as the CB, I ordered this: http://www.amazon.com/Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390867797&sr=8-1&keywords=midland+cb    With a separate antenna. Looks like it won't get in the way and might work well for trails.

Thanks guys! keep em comin!!

Steve, are you saying you already have a Blue Ox baseplate mounted?

If not, Blue did develop adapters to fit their tow are directly to the D Ring fittings of some manufactures bumpers. Check with them for specifics. I used Blue Ox bolt-on adapters prior to the new adapters becoming available and they continue to do well.

Something like this might answer you quest for a CB ......Just found one of these in a junker, dont know how well they work but they are cheap on e-bay and portable so you dont have to leave it in the jeep to get stolen and can hide it under the seat. Maybe someone has one of these and can tell me how well they work.

After going through two CB radios, I finally found one I like and works well - it's a Uniden Bearcat PC78.  My first CB was a $30 Midland, the receiver went south in it after a few months.  Next one was a Cobra all-in-one microphone (the mic has all of the controls and speaker) - I hated that one because it didn't perform well and the mic was way too large to be comfortable in my hands.

Another option is a CB talkie - I have this one and it's okay but the range with the rubber-duckie is pretty bad.  It would be okay with an external antenna

Quite a few of the guys I off road with including myself are using Uniden Pro520XL's cb's. They are compact, work very well, and only run about $50. Personally I run one with a 2' firestick, and it's as clear as a bell....http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-PRO520XL-40-Channel-CB-Radio/dp/B00004VXNI

I know a few people who have run this one as well and like it.

I have the Cobra model 75 and really like it.  It is the one that mounts remotely and all of the controls are in the mic/handset.  I like it mainly because it is concealed and out of the way but it works well.  In a Jeep with the top off I will recommend running an external speaker as the small speaker in the handset is not adequate.  I mounted a small 4" 20 ohm speaker just above my rearview mirror and it works great, plus I was able to completely hide all of the wiring under trim panels all the way down to the unit itself mounted under the passenger seat.

That's a great start.

Add a tree strap (probably won't need that for Moab, but good to have anyway), two shackles (D rings), a few large zip-ties, duct tape, ratchet strap, spare fuses, leather gloves, we also carry a roll of TP in a zip-lock baggie, flashlight, pen/pencil and paper, backpack with a change of clothes (you can get real dirty and/or wet on the trail especially if you have to do a trail repair), lightweight rain suits or a poncho and if we're in the desert, we carry some jackets in case you're out and it's getting near dark.

I've stopped carrying a high-lift jack - those things are amazingly dangerous to use and now carry a bottle jack.

Soft sided or hard side cooler for lunch and snacks that you can immobilize and plenty of water.  DW and I usually go through six or eight bottles of water between us.  It's always good to have a GPS of some sort that does breadcrumbs so you can always find your way back at the end of the day.

Looks like you do Steve. Very nice set up.

Do you have trails around where you live?

Get out and drive that puppy!

And ditto on the leather gloves!

Just curious, does your winch have cable or rope?
I put together a nice recovery bag with all the goodies in it!
That way that is all I need to grab to help someone!

And a good tire plug kit is a must! I don't think anyone has said that yet!

The trail starts out pretty enough and then... note the archway.  I  think it is about here that Mike turned around as this was an out and back trail to get scratches coming and going!

The best I have around here is fire roads in the forest.

The winch I ordered has synthetic rope, hope it's a decent quality line on it. Got the gloves and plug kit!

OK Guys, Here is where I stand as of now.

Front recovery bumper w/ 12k winch: Installing bumper today, winch will be here on the 21st.

Wednesday, 2" lift and 33"MT tires install.

Wednesday, Remove factory steps and install Rock Sliders.

Have: 1-30' recovery strap, 1-Fire Extinguisher, 1- First aid kit, 1- Tire repair kit, 1- Compressor, Spare fluids, 1- Folding Shovel, CB Radio, Rear receiver hitch recovery adapter.

Whats next??? I think I should be set for a bit for the mild stuff????

Might want a pair of jumper cables...if you have an android tablet with a built in GPS... find the app called "Back Country Navigator"... You'll love it for finding your way around the trails of Moab and many other places.  Might wanna yank that back seat out now, the space will be useful unless you have more than one passenger.  Spare fuses are always handy...  check out the post by Sarge about the 4wd shifter issue...  also, some front sway bar (manual) disconnects will be helpful... and, maybe, some Staun tire deflators...finally, some grab handles that attach to the roll-bar will be appreciated by your passenger...

we always fill an old one gallon antifreeze container with plain ole water and put it under the driver's seat, JIC.

didn't see a "tool kit" in your list either... only need to bring the tools that you are going to use though (lol).

Back Country Navigator Pro is a app that we use to import and export trail tracks. Create tracks, leave bread crumbs, use gps coordinates,  and put in waypoints. One needs a android tablet that has gps. most e readers do not have gps It's so much easier to use than a trail book. But they would be the next best thing.

You automatic become a member of every trail when you purchase BCN. Which is a source of tracks and info. Trail Damage is another great source.

7 or 8" tablets seem to be a good size. And you'll need a 12v usb adapter to keep the battery charged. We use a roof mount, but windshield mounts seem to be the most popular. Al-tho I think they impair you view.

Technology has met off roading,  and it is another great tool to help keep us safe on the trail.

Ok guys, I need help!!!  I'm shopping for some good sliders. I have a chance to get these  http://www.quadratec.com/products/12528_2412_07.htm from a local shop, they are take offs for $325.00.

I just dont know how they will stand up to real use. Any other suggestions for some solid ones that won't break the bank??

Are those for a JK?  I looked at that link and those were for a TJ/LJ.  Call Northridge 4x4 and ask them for recommendations.  If the sliders bolt against the side of the body, be sure and use a gasket to keep moisture from wicking in between the two and facilitating rust.

I may not have put up the right link. They are for the JK. They bolt where the stock ruby rails do on the floor and pinch weld.

That depends entirely on the type, difficulty level of the trail and what you're driving.  A stock 2-door JK Rubicon is very, very capable right off the showroom lot.  A stock 4-door - no way Jose; I've seen stock 4-doors play the beached whale trick time and time again.  I felt embarrassed for this one guy I was on a trail with - he had to be strapped over sharp breakovers maybe 6-8 times in one day.  Made for a long day for everybody else  ::).

I may not have put up the right link. They are for the JK. They bolt where the stock ruby rails do on the floor and pinch weld.
The blurb I read said 3/16" steel so that's a positive.  Generally speaking, Smittybuilt isn't exactly top of the shelf stuff.

If you want the clean and close to body look but still very solid, the OEM Rubicon rails are very rigid and umazingly will withstand the weight of a the Jeep very easily.  I wanted a guy hammer his 4-door on an obstacle called Wayne's World on one of our Utah trails and I was amazed when he made it up and over how the powder coating was only scratched.  The manner in which he kept repeatedly dropping the weight of the Jeep on the drivers' side rail, I would have thought it would look like a pretzel when he made it up and over.

Aftermarket one I like the Teraflex.  They are solid and look nice as well.  They stick out a little further than the OEM which also helps keep the road spray off the body a little.  A guy in our Jeep club just installed a set and I really like them.

Like John said, make sure to get a gasket between the body and sliders if they attach to the side of the body at all.

Thanks Mike. I'm really stuck on this. I like the terraflex but not the price. I may go with the Smitty XDs after looking around the rails are as heavy as most other good ones3/16"  and the pipe is .125"   I think I want the pipe for DW to step on. for $325.00 It's cheap enough I guess and if I fold them up, Oh well...

Ordering the last 2 items for Moab,

1. Sway bar disconnects

2. Evap Canister armour, Decided against the relocate kit for now.

Can't wait to get home and do the final bit of installation. Then it's time to chomp the bit until Moab!!!!!

Well, Today I completed the Pre-Moab Build up.

Rock Sliders installed

Sway Bar Disconnects installed

Evap Skid Plate... NOT Installed. After getting the old braket/plate off and putting it all together I tried to mount it only to find that it will not fit. A Call to Rough Country and some e-mailed pics, They swear that they have never seen a 13'; Jeep with the exhaust configured the way mine is. So, No GO!!

I guess I'll have to  be gentle...

Ready to go now!*fingers thrumming to desk! ;D ;D ;D

I used the Rock Hard Evap Canister relocation bracket instead of a skid place.  It puts it out of harms way above the axle.

It wasn't Moab but I got a chance to get out yesterday. I was in a group of Jeeps and we traveled over Wheeler Pass. The front part of the trail was fun, the last half on the Pahrump side was merely 20 miles of dirt road, dusty and no fun.

It wasn't Moab but I got a chance to get out yesterday. I was in a group of Jeeps and we traveled over Wheeler Pass. The front part of the trail was fun, the last half on the Pahrump side was merely 20 miles of dirt road, dusty and no fun.

You want fun, here ya go.

Nothing to be scared about, you weren't doing it. LOL

A good spotter or two really help. There was always two of us spotting and to be honest, there was very little damage to the Jeeps. I couldn't believe it with the difficulty as the trails we ran. Here is the sign to Helldorado and the last obstacle of Helldorado. A 12 foot water falls!

Steve, out of curiosity, where will you hook up the safety cables?

Steve, out of curiosity, where will you hook up the safety cables?

Well, myBlue Ox Base Plate came with some short safety cables to put from the frame to the plate. I'm going to use those, looped around the frame and shackled to it as my anchor point for the longer cables. This should get me by until I have a chance to have some padeyes welded to the frame that will be easy to get to.

Maybe I can talk Catblaster into putting his wizardly skills to use on that for me! lol

That is some intense four-wheeling. Not something that I will try though, my Jeep will not be ready for those trails...it does look fun.

Proves you don't have to go fast to have fun!
