Highway speeds when camper in bed of truck.
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:22:11 AM »
I thought I'd ask if legal highway speeds are affected with a truck & camper, as opposed to those pulling trailers?    I know some states have posted speeds for semi's pulling trailers, but thought I'd ask if truck & camper combinations are the same as all vehicles, or sometimes altered to semi type truck speed limits?
This is mainly for western states, as I have an upcoming trip soon, and would like to have the correct knowledge on this topic.

Thanks.

The most problematical state is CA where you are limited to 55mph and the right lane when towing anything.  A truck camper not towing is the same as any other 2 axle vehicle as far as speed limits.

Not necessarily. In WA the lower truck speed limit applies to any vehicle with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds.
The F450 in question probably has a 14,500 GVWR.

A lot of western states are 80mph interstate. When hauling my 2000lb slide in on my 1993 F350 I go more by what stress I'm willing to put the truck under vs. how quick I need to get to where I'm going much more than the legal speed limit. The faster you go the more stress on various components of the truck and more likely something will fail. The other day I was doing 85 and the rear lug nuts weren't tightened to the recommended 150lb torque so 6 of the wheel studs sheered off.
