We are planning one of our first RV trips to scenic SE Minnesota Bluff Country and would love to find other RVers to join us. Tentatively we are planning a trip for May 29 – June 1.  If you might be interested let us know so that we can get your input and keep you up to date on the plans.

Below we have listed some area attractions and links.

Area attractions:
--  Hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, and horseback riding along the Root River Trail.
--  National trout center and fly fishing – three blue-ribbon trout streams. (We can look into getting lessons for fly fishing pros in the
     area.)
--  Amish Tours and Amish farms and buggies along country roads
--  Mystery Cave and Niagara Cave- stalactites, stalagmites, and underground pools. Guided tours by Park Naturalists. Possibly a
guided tour for photographers (hobbyist, enthusiast, or pro so that you can bring a tripod or monopod.)
--  Historic sites including ghost towns and old cemeteries (Zumbro Hills Cemetery)
--  Scenic trials and byways
--  Arts and entertainment in Lanesboro
--  Slims Wood Shed – The largest wood carving museum in the US

We might be interested in that on our way to Milwaukee.  However, that is Memorial Day weekend so getting reservations there might be difficult unless done early enough.

Changed the dates to May 29 to June 1.  That way we would avoid Memorial Day weekend.  Will that work for you Lorna and plan to travel to Milwaukee?

Yes that would work for us.  Do you have a campground in mind? We can check to see if there is a COR park or a PA park in the area.

We are brand new to RVing so we don't know what COR or PA parks are?  Please explain and I will start researching.  Thanks

Lorna means Corp of Engineers and Passport America.  There are quite a few COE parks on the river and PA parks offer 50% camping for short stays.  COE parks generally have paved roads and wide sites with mostly 50A electric and water.  Reasonably priced too with 50% off with any of the government access passes.

If you have a central location in mind, we can research the area for suitable campgrounds.

Ned and Lorna,

We are thinking the area around Preston, Harmony, and Lanesboro, Minnesota area.  With a quick search it looks like there might be a PA campground in the area.  There also several MN State Parks.  I didn't see any COE parks unless we go to Wisconsin or Iowa.  However, as I keep saying we're beginners so your search might be more efficient and uncover more locations.

Thanks for decoding COE and PA for us.  We are familiar with COE but did not know about PA.  It looks like something we should sign up for.

There are 2 Passport America campgrounds in that area, but the PA rate is only good for Sunday through Thursday.  Also, 2 COE campgrounds on the river about 25 miles south of La Crosse.

We are going to be at Eagle Cliff campground in Lanesboro, MN www.eagle-cliff.com over Memorial Day. I believe this is the largest and nicest, cleanest campground in the area. Biking on the Root River trail is very popular and fun. It is an all blacktop trail. http://www.rootrivertrail.org/site/index.php The wife likes the shops in Lanesboro and it is quite a unique area based around bicycling. Some of the Amish sell some of their goods in the local park on Saturday of that weekend. Reservations for anywhere in that area is a must for Memorial Day weekend. However on late Monday or the Tuesday after, everything is all open. We have been known to go early and stay late.

Eagle Cliff would work for us and we are also flexible on dates.  Sounds like making reservations ASAP is needed.  Thanks so much for helping us along to coordinate what looks like the beginning of a mini rally?

Can't answer the question on WiFi because we use Verizon MiFi. It is some what in a gully and cell phone reception can be questionable at times.

There are several campgrounds in the area and I am sure they are all nice. Eagle Cliff just happens to be our choice. They also have a brand new blacktop road from Lanesboro to the campground. Less than a year old.

Right now our tentative plans are to spend Memorial Day weekend at friends in Boscobel, WI, then head up to MN either on Monday or Tuesday.  We could spend several days with all of you before heading to Milwaukee for the summer.  Would May 27-30 work for both of you?

Right now the 27-30 would be ok with us, we will be arriving on Friday May 23rd. We have site B5 or B6 reserved for 2014 don't remember which.
Eagle Cliff advertises that the 5th night is free. Lets hope there are no floods this year.

By the way Jeff says to watch out for that Ned guy. We are parked three lots away from Jeff for the winter.

Yes last year the floods were bad and affected most of the campground. We were lucky enough that they were able to put us in a different site.

Don't believe anything Jeff says, especially about me :)  We'll make reservations for May 27-30 at Eagle Cliff next week.  The rally is on!

Now who would have ever thought there would be a mini rally thirty one miles from our home. We are booked at Eagle Cliff along with Tourmaster arriving on May 23rd, and will be in site B-3.

We bought our Passport America card today and are waiting for the folks at Eagle Cliff to return our call so that we can reserve a site.  Our new trailer should be here in April and we should have a chance to take it out at least once or twice before the trip to Eagle Creek.  I noticed that so far everyone has a Class A.  We're taking baby steps with our first RV at 21 feet.  This summer will be a good learning experience for us.  Hey we have three tents in graduating sizes so we're moving on up.

I just made our reservation online for site B9, May 26-31, but have to call later to work out the PA discount.  Apparently it's cash only and that's a bit difficult to do online :)

Ned,

No one from Eagle Creek has responded to my email or phone messages.  Can you take a look at the campground map and help me figure out which site to select and so that I can make an online reservation?  Our new TT is 21' and we drive a Durango.  I think Eric (husband) told me the total length of everything is 43'.  That sounds long to me but I suppose by the time we count the TT, vehicle, hitch, bike rack, etc. that might be right.  For the time being I am clueless about all this.

Also, we would also like to use our new PA card so if you hear back from Eagle Creek before I do regarding the cash transaction, please pass on the info.

Many thanks for the beginners.

Use the online reservation page to locate available sites, it will prompt you for all the pertinent information.  There are several still available in the B campground which seems to be where everyone else is parking.  If I can't reach them by phone, I'll use their contact form on the web site.  They apparently only charge the credit card for one night and I assume will collect the balance less the PA discount at check in time, but I'll verify that.

I just called and of course they're closed until April 1, so I sent an email with our questions rather than leave a phone message.  I'll let you know when they reply.

Ned,

I think I figured out the Eagle Creek campground map and hopefully reserved a site that will work for us.  I reserved B-10.

Anyhow I have a Reservation Confirmation and I might have to wait until the campground is officially open on April 1 to figure out the PA discount and cash transaction.

Mini Rally in bluff country of SE Minnesota.
« Reply #26 on: March 04, 2014, 10:33:38 AM »
When I made the reservation I noticed that some RV Forum members had indicated that they have reserved a site yet the sites they mentioned still show as available.  I hope there isn't a glitch in the reservation system.

Anyhow we will be there May 27 through May 30 on site B-10.  It looks like some people are going earlier and/or staying later.

The map now shows our site, B-9, as not available, but B-3 is shown as available.  B-6 is available, but B-5 and B-10 are not.  Becks needs to extend their reservation for that week if they want to stay in B-3.

Has this thread become too confusing for anyone else who might want to join us?  Should I start another thread with the info about the mini rally, Eagle Creek, dates, etc.  What is the protocol?

Our PPA discount will be applied at check-in.  The discount is valid Sunday-Thursday and the cost is $20/site with cash payment.

That was quick :)
