Need to visit family in Wake forest this seems to be the closest spot I'm wondering if it gets used by many or is it more of a fair thing? Is there staff there, safe, secure, whats the scoop fellow travelers?

Here's their website with lots of info. http://www.ncstatefair.org/facilities/camping.htm The newest section was built in the last 5 years and offers FHU. Relatives have stayed there several times in the last few years and are pleased with the sites, safety, and security.
Unless there is some event going on (they list a number to call to check on this), you will have a choice of dozens of good sites.
