campgrounds near montreal

hi will be up in montreal the first 2 weeks of july  can anyone reccomend a campground within 30 miles or so  thank you
 
From what I have seen of Quebec, an idyllic camping weekend would be to find a mall parking lot where the stores are closed for Sunday.

Your best option for Montreal, is probably finding a few WalMarts you can stay in a few days at time. For an actual campground where you can camp, dump and fill, the closest option is probably in Ontario: Voyageur Provincial Park

A number of years ago we stayed at the Montreal-South KOA.  It is near a commuter train station with lots of parking so it was an easy way to get into Montreal for sightseeing.  Much cheaper to pay for parking at the train station than in downtown Montreal.
 
I don't know of any camp grounds remaining on the Island itself. There are some just west of the Island in Vaudreuil, Hudson, St Lazare all within that 30 miles or so  and some on the south shore. I don't know about Laval (the island adjacent to and  just to the north of Montreal)

And... Stan you would be hard pressed to find a shopping centre/mall closed on a Sunday today!!!

Your information seems to be a little dated. Most stores are open on sunday now and the only place where camping is permitted seems to be the wallmart at the corner of highway 30 and 10. Very near to Montreal; close walk to restaurants, shopping and bus to Montreal but I am not sure they allow to leave the RV unnatended; they probably don't check. http://www.quartierdix30.com/home

As for a list of campings there is a free magazine you can pick up at any camping/tourism info center or RV dealer. http://www.campingquebec.com

We went to KOA once; had rented a class A and need to park close to home for the last day and get it back to the dealer early. It's pretty good as a place to park and has a pool. No other attractions. No forest to explore. Just a place to eat and look at your RV neighbors.

Most cities in Quebec have a free dumping station but they are hard to find. Got to google quite a lot. Mine is here http://www.rvtransit.com/ad-677-ateliers-municipaux-saint-hubert .There are a few campgrounds near highways all around Montreal but they are usually mostly seasonal campers. Lots of people, golf carts, loud. Not my style.

Fun nature campgrounds are found from here http://www.sepaq.com/home/index.dot?language_id=1  They's won't be close to Montreal.

Whatever you choose you probably don't want to go into Montreal with a car. Even not considering parking fees most attractions are close together and the metro system if cheap and efficient. Downtown and old Montreal are close together. There are some other neighborhood such as avenue Duluth that could be interesting and easier to reach by car. But to begin with train or bus to downtown will do perfectly well if you can walk 5-10 minutes without dying  :)
 
Our basic defense rule for Montreal, has always been to arrive on Sunday morning; and plan to be outta there before noon before everyone else gets outta bed!

I remember our first trip to Montreal, for Expo '67, before the days of GPS and all that kind of stuff. While struggling to find our way back to the campground, we arrived at the very same Victoria Bridge for the third time and had pay the toll yet again, I came up with the idea: "Maybe we should go home now!"  ;D

Well that was a while ago. I was not even close to being born. Victoria still stands but does not have a toll anymore. Champlain bridge is crumbling and will be rebuilt with a toll; other bridges may go back to tolls or not. Much politicking has to be done before we decide.

Had the same experience coming into NY city. "Hey that is great; almost no traffic coming onto this bridge. What??? 14$ toll!!!"
 
Hi there,  we camped in Laval and there is a bus stop right out lane to hop on to get downtown albeit not without transfers.  I believe it was Parc Laval, very clean and close to many things and can accommodate big units.
