We will be taking the ferry from Port Rupert to Skagway - stopping for a couple of days at each port along the way. Should we make advanced ferry reservations? Can we successfully make reservations at each port a couple of days before we plan to embark for the next leg of travel?

Generally you can make your next reservation when you arrive in the port - especially if you are staying for a couple days at each port - they can show you the loading for each destination and you can inquire ahead of really full legs and then reserve for the full ones.
Give the Alaska Marine Highway planning desk a call and outline your proposed itinerary and they can advise you which legs typically are hard to book...

So an RVer can literally travel Oregon to Alaska then?

Prince Rupert is in British Columbia and Skagway is in Alaska. The Alaska Marine Highway system's southern-most point is Bellingham, Washington. It does not go to Oregon.

Okay, then the answer is yes you can go from Washington to Alaska on the water highway. It's kind of neat with many beautiful fjords. The capitol of Juneau is not accessible by road so you either get there by ferry or an airplane. It's worth doing at least once! You also can take a regular cruise ship, but the ferry is nice because you can take your RV on it.

We made this trip a few years ago, but we did it in the reverse order. We were told that almost everyone does it like you planned, ferry up and drive back down. So, according to our source, if you drive up, catch the ferry in Skagway and travel south, reservations are much easier to get because of the fact that there are far fewer people to contend with. We did it that way and had no trouble getting what we wanted. We got off at every stop and stayed 1-3 days depending on what was there. The only place we missed was Sitka because the way the schedules worked out, we would have been there either a few hours or 5 days. We made all the reservations before we left home. The whole trip was a treat, and the only downside was frequent rain.
