The West Coast with the Wishard"s
« on: June 07, 2014, 11:31:59 AM »
We have started a new and exciting year, however I am really behind on this blog. We left Texas April 31,2014 after staying at Sunset Shores in Willis. Tx. for a month visiting family and mostly me fishing. We left and headed to Red Bay, Alabama to have service work and re-calls repairs on our rig. Spent 18 days at the service center. That a whole different story.
After leaving Red Bay, we encountered hail, wind, snow and mechanical problems. Had hail damage in the Panhandle of Texas, lost a topper awning in New Mexico and also drove thru a blizzard. In Texas anything over a few flakes is a blizzard.

05-21-14  This is the first time we have been stranded in our Rig. Coming into  Ely, Nv. after leaving Moab we lost out belt on the engine. After calling Good Sam's road service about 3 hours later a truck was dispatched and arrived to tow us the 40 miles to Ely.
Spent 4 days there trying to get a belt shipped to us. Finally fixed it myself after buying 8 assorted sizes from Napa. No one could tell me the belt routing on the engine. All they could do is suggest sizes.

Trying hard to get out of California but it's very hard to do. So many thing to see and places to go. The redwoods and the coastline is just breath taking. Stayed in Fortuna, Ca. a few day. Don't miss Ferndale Canyon.

We left Trinidad, Ca after staying at the Sound of the Sea Rv park. We headed for Oregon. We lucked out and found a spot in Harris Beach State Park in Brookings, Or. If you ever book here ask for site A-20. Picture attached of the view from that spot.
I have finally caught up with myself. Now if I can just keep up. Having to much fun and to many things and places to see.

North to South I think it must be a longer trip. We are leaving Brookings today and heading to Gold Beach about 29 miles down the road. Think we might do Jerry's Jet Boat ride up the Rogue river in the next few days.
Does anyone have any suggestions on camping in State Parks heading North? Maybe even a nice RV park off the beaten path.

We've got reservations at Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay in July. It is on the ocean and has electric and water hook ups. I/we've never been there yet, so I can't say whether it will be worth the visit.

Henry,
Don't miss Jerry's jet boat. take the long trip -

John, Sunset Bay campground isn't actually on the ocean - but it's close to the bay and it's beach.

You guys are touring our favorite area. We'll get there later this summer. We love the Oregon Coast.

Stop in a visitor center and pick up a off road sticker. About 10 bucks for 2 years. Fine is $80 if you get caught without one. Some nice off roading up in Oregon and Washington.

Do get a ice cream in Tillamook, free for veterans.  Also the air museum. Nice Pics, keep them coming. We will be heading that way end of summer.

Stop at Mo's in either Florence or Lincoln City if you like clam chowder and fresh oysters at the end of the spit in Winchester Bay.  While at Sunset Bay take in the gardens at Shore Acres, the site of the former mansion of the Simpson lumber family.

First I have to reply to the Alaskan thing. If Alaska ever gets a good heat wave and all that Ice melts it might be about the size of a Connecticut. Just kidding "I Loved Alaska"
Today was a great day on the Rouge river in Oregon. We are parked on the water and Jerry"s boat picked us up about 100 Yards from our campsite. We saw Eagles, Deer, Racoons, Blue Herring, Osprey and lots of Duck and Geese. No bears today. On the way back we passed by were someone had just drowned on the river. I hope they brought him back they were working frantically to revive him.
   Posting a few pics.

We have had our m/h on the ferry to San Juan Island once with the kids for a week. The only place that seemed equipped for 40' motorhones was Lakedale RV Park in Friday Harbor. The ferry was $500 bucks for m/h, 8 people and a car back in 2004, hate to think what the rates are today.

A nice alternative would be to set up the Phaeton at the Fildago Bay RV Resort in Anacortes and use the car to explore the San Juans. The Ferry ride up through the Islands is absolutely stunning.

A lower price alternative would be the RV Park at Northern Lights Casino down the road  a couple of miles. It has a nice view of Mt Baker and the inland waterway. If you are in the area have lunch in La Conner along the waterway and stroll through the cute town. just keep an eye on Margaret around all the shops.

On your way north spend a couple of days on the Longbeach Peninsula and check out the Willa Bay Oyster Pier along with the other sights at this SW Washington vacation spot.

We rode the ferry through the San Juans (pre-motorhome days) and overnighted on Whidby Island.  Continued on to Victoria.  Much to see in that area, including Butchart Gardens.

The roundtrip for jeep, driver and one pax is about $60.00 to Friday Harbor. Motorhome, car, and two drivers is about $365. I am not sure why we paid so much.

Henry,

We're on Vancouver Island at Campbell River right now for 3 more days, then working our way south to Victoria (6/16 to 6/19). From there we plan to take the ferry to Anacordes. Maybe our paths will cross.

Before coming here we spent 5 days in Vancouver (actually we stayed in West Vancouver) and really enjoyed the city. Loved Stanley Park.

Hello Ken and Shelia, you guys are just hanging around until the FMCA Rally at Redmond. And yes I am sure our paths will cross somewhere out there. We can't seem to get out of Oregon. So much to see and do on the coast. We have been here 2 weeks and only about 80 miles up from the Calif coast.

Henry,

Stop at Winchester Bay on your way north (if you haven't already passed it). Great little fishing village with several RV parking options. And several nice local restaurants.

The marina RV Resort is the high end.Get a "pull in" space facing the harbor. Our favorite parking is the dry camping on the second spit facing the harbor. see picture
