I found this Mushroom growing at the base of an Oak tree along side the road going back in to our house,  it seems to be there every year when we have enough rain and fairly high humidity.

This is the first time I was able to get some good pictures before it got broken or dried out.

Does any one know what kind it is?

Well, I found out the answer to my question.    It is a "Chicken of the Woods" and is edible, and suppose to taste like chicken.

It is indeed beautiful.  However, when I worked as a librarian at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, we had some serious fungi experts and they were horrified when people ate mushrooms growing wild.  Too many are poisonous and they look similar to ones that are edible.  California over the years has had many of Vietnamese hill people die from mushrooms they thought were like the ones at home.  I wouldn't eat any mushrooms from unknown sources.
