We are headed to Oregon in a couple weeks and I'm planning to fish as much as possible and would like to Try to catch some salmon. What would you suggest for bait?

In the Pacific, we used to troll anchovies &/or salmon killers. You'll need either a downrigger or a heavy (1-2 lb) lead ball on a quick release. Try different depths until you start getting hits. Those fresh silver salmon are a great catch. Check the latest regulations.

I'm going to be fishing in the rivers not in the ocean. I don't have the right fishing poles for fishing in the ocean since all my fishing is freshwater. Is this going to be a problem?

Josh, I suspect it's a little early for salmon to be in the rivers, but I'm not up on the latest fishing reports. You might get some detailed info at the OR Dept of Fish and Wildlife site.

Thanks Tom. I read something a couple weeks ago online about a certain type of salmon in the rivers Jul-Aug but I don't remember which. I know the best times seem to be around October, I wish I could be there during that time.

You didn't say what part of Oregon you will be in. I know the Rogue River begins to see some Salmon late July. If you are up near Portland, get yourself out on The Columbia!

We will be on the Umpqua River and the Rogue River. We will be staying at Grants Pass the last few days of July and first couple days of August before heading home.

Josh, don't know if these will help, but here are a few links to salmon fishing in Oregon rivers:

Some of these sites haven't been updated in a few years.

You might want to visit Cole M. Rivers Fish Hatchery on the Rogue River while you're in the area.  We volunteered there about seven years ago.  Most all of the employees are avid fishermen and outdoorsmen.  They can provide lots of tips and information.  If there is a run going on, you can watch them strip and fertilize the eggs.  If they're not too busy, they'll give you a tour of the facility.  It's the second largest hatchery in Oregon.

Great area. We will be in Grants Pass mid August for 5 days. We will be staying at River Park RV right on the Rogue. My wife's brother has lived right on the river for many years. And then north to Florence for a few days and then ending up at Nehalem Bay State Park.
