Took apart inside vents to paint and the brown mesh stuff deteriorated in my hand. Do I need, where do I find and the purpose? It was I between two metal screens. Thanks

If it feels like deteriorated foam it is probably the same stuff you can buy as a replacement for air conditioning filters in the home. you can buy a sheet of it at Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It is inexpensive.
