New Mexico is not a good place for RVing
« on: July 09, 2014, 01:00:46 AM »
Quote my husband "There is nothing here but Casinos and Tattoo parlor left". Haha. I think he is just tired and in a bad mood after he discovered the so call best place in Taos is a dump and could not make himself stay there as planned.

RVing sure is tough when you cannot have a bit of humor when things do not turn out as planned. I feel like a snail carrying its house everywhere. The more stuff you have the more burdensome and heavy you life feels. Maybe it is time to lighten up.

Bosque del Apache Wildlife Reserve is one of the best in the nation. Check out the Festival of the Crane near Thanksgiving when 25,000 Sandhill Cranes show up to spend the winter. The Very Large Array telescope is one of the finest in the nation. The Trinity Atom Bomb test sight is one of the stranger pieces of history. And the balloon festival in Albuquerque is one of the best in the country. Trade in your husband.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Amen to that! When the day comes when we can't chuckle a bit over unmet expectations and move on, I hope we have the sense to hang up the keys. Or at least park it in some comfortable place for the duration.

Hope that hubby was just having a bad day. It happens...

We are new to the Forum...I am born n raised in NM and the list posted had a few spots which I have not seen. Thanks for posting.
Family lives in Rio Rancho and found what appears to be a decent RV Park there.  Plan on looking further before choosing this place.
In addition, if you are self-contained, the Sandia Casino offers free rv parking.

Love the Deming area.  Cheapest RV parks we have ever found and very close to access to Mexico for day trips.  Big state.  Plenty of good and bad if you look around.

There is so much to see here in NM. That's why after living  (and working ) here for 35 years, the first thing I will do when I get my travel trailer and retire is to tour the state. Been too busy working to see a lot of it.

BTW, the Balloon Fiesta is now in progress until this Sunday.

Here is a site that we use constantly to get the inside scoop on all RV parks we stay at.  All reviews are written by the folks that stay have stayed there, so the info tends to be more objective.  rvparkreviews.com   I rate every park I stay in.

Try Pendaries RV Resort. You'll want to go out of your way to stay in NM for this little jewel.

Was concerned when I read this first post....glad I revisited...

When we start long timing, NM is one of the places we were going...  we have no interest in casinos (tons of them here) not tattoo parlors...

thanks all for the update...

Good list of things to do.  I didn't see listed the home of one of the heroes of my childhood, Kit Carson.  The Vietnam Memorial at Angel Fire was on the list.  I think it is a don't miss item.  It is somber.  One of my favorite SW restaurants is El Paragua at Espanola.  http://www.elparagua.com/

New Mexico has great state parks and one of the BEST deals for an annual camping pass for those state parks. Casinos are good for boondocking and buffets. And there are also some great BLM campgrounds.

Capulin Volcano National Monument. a tip here, you are not allowed to take lava rocks from there but anywhere on the roadside before you get to it you can.

LOL, we've lived in Taos for 15 years and we agree you probably don't want to stay here.  There are no high end RV Parks, with concrete parking spots and heated pools that's for sure.  But, especially don't stay in Taos unless you like  world class skiing, 7500 ft elevations, exquisite museums, great art shows and festivals, leading edge music venues, earth ships, rafting on Class V rapids in the Rio Grande River, Aspens in the Fall, hiking in the mountains, high mesa golfing, 5* restaurants or visiting a 1200 year old World Heritage Site.  BTW, a new tattoo shop just opened too.  Have safe travels.

You rang??  :)

Try staying in Chama instead of Taos.  It's only a couple hour drive from Taos, very scenic and there are three excellent RV parks there.  I recommend Sky Mountain RV park.

BTW....New Mexico has a lot to see.  Big state with every type of topography imaginable, from lush forests in high elevations to wide open deserts.  Excellent place for RVing.

Interesting to note the original poster was a one-shot wonder last year.

Frankly, I don't know the "dump" to which he refers, but we have stayed extensively at Monte Bello and Taos Valley in Taos and have no complaints. I think Gary (taoshum) summed it up - don't come if you don't want something fun to do!

We have stayed all over New Mexico and it is our favorite destination for the variety of things to do and places to see.

I was proud to be in Albuquerque when I turned 62 and got my Geezer Pass at Petroglyph National Monument.

It truly is "the land of enchantment".

Kim

p.s. Now if he/she stayed at the Walmart, I can see why they think they had a problem - otherwise, how did this post get in the board???  8)

I wish I could say I was proud when I got my "Geezer" pass.. But mostly I was in Shock.

You see. when I made the reservation for the campground I used my wife's Geezer pass... I did not need one.

(I got mine on the way out.  cause I needed it).

I find it strange that anyone can even drive through it,     and not say that most all of New Mexico of is beautiful...

any larger city is just about the same in every state..... not very good places for RVing.

This all sounds like the time we took a 3-week jaunt "out west" back in 2007. We spent 2 days in Utah and had a miserable time - crappy campground, 25 mph on some mountain passes, a busted alternator, and a museum (which was our primary reason for being there) that we were unaware had recently closed. To this day, whenever I hear the word Utah, I cringe. At least now we can joke about it. :)

This story doesn't have anything to do with RVing.  Born & raised in NM.  We traveling home for Dad's funeral, late at night and driving on one of the roads that go on forever, with sagebrush & cactus the only thing to see, except for the big, beautiful stars.  It was very quiet, most everyone asleep when my 8 year old grandson, from the back of the Suburban, goes, pssst, pssst Nena, do you hear the Mothership calling?  We all busted out laughing and no more sleeping.

Last time I went through NM was in 82 on a motorcycle on I 40, I think it was. Anyhow it was 17*F and dark, stopped just past Santa Rosa at a small diner to warm up, first time I ever had green chili. Met up with a guy who was travelling from New Orleans to Albuquerque, we rode into town as the sun was coming up. I took I 25 south to Socorro and then on to Magdalena on Rt 60 then on to Show Low, Az. There was a lot of cool stuff including the worlds Worst Apple Pie at the end of a 22 mile long straight stretch of road and the Telescope Array.
I can't wait to get back out there and show it to my wife, it was spectacular to say the least. This time it'll be in the motorhome since she can't ride long distances anymore, but the bike will be onboard.

Amen, amen to that.  Last trip to bury ashes of MIL.  Trip cost over $5000 (new AC compressor and remanufactured Allison Tranny) and the trip only lasted 6 days.  It will be hard to beat that as the trip from hell.

Dust and Deming, I do not want to be there when the wind blows. We enjoyed our stay there, beautiful place to be, but when the wind blows,  the dust is simply amazing.

Well, just noticed I'm wearing an Indian Concho belt that I bought in Taos.  It could have been made in China, but hey I got it in Taos New Mexico.  There is quite a lot to see and do around there.  Just across the mountain is the beautiful Angel Fire Valley.  The Enchanted Circle is a great drive.  If you like Western history, Kit Carson's home is open for tours.  I enjoy northern New Mexico.
