John From Detroit's mention of the Popular Science series about Gus Wilson and the Model Garage brought back memories - it was my favorite when I was growing up and was one of the reasons I subscribed to P.S.
The entire 140 year Popular Science archive is available on Google Books:

I'm catching up on the Model Garage now.
Google has an amazing number of magazines in their archive. Go to http://books.google.comhttp://books.google.com/books/magazines/language/en for a complete listing (warning: it's several pages long). You'll be presented with a random issue from each title - click on "Browse All Issues" and you'll get an index of all available issues.
