We plan to cross Oregon from Bend to Vale and I was wondering which is the better route to take, 20 or 26? We have a 2500HD pulling a 32' fifth-wheel. What are the roads like, terrain, and any smoke from fires? Thanks for any info!

Hwy 20 from Bend would be an easier drive. Mostly flat two lane highway. Hwy 26 has some hills and turns, slower traveling. Should not be very much smoke.

We travel both routes a lot. Just did 26 earlier this month. Hwy 20 is easier and shorter, Hwy 26 is more scenic. Both have a couple of passes to negotiate but nothing too difficult. We're in La Pine right now and there's no smoke at all, which doesn't mean there won't be some tomorrow or next week.

We were shrouded in smoke here in the Umpqua Basin earlier today, so much so that we drove around the park making sure everything was OK.  Now, after a wind shift, we're clear again.  Fire dispatch (on land line, not 911) said smoke was coming from the Oakridge fire earlier.
