I bought one of these  http://www.costco.com/Amped-Wireless-High-Power-700MW-Wi-Fi-Dual-Band-802.11AC-Router-.product.100120194.html  and I have to say I am blown away by how powerful and fast it is.  In the furthest reaches of my house, where I used to get about 3mbps I'm now getting 50.  In the same room with the antennas I get over 80mbps where I used to get 30.  I knew my old wireless N300 router was a bottleneck but I didn't know how much of one it was.

Setup took no more than 5 minutes and I did it all from my iPad.

I haven't seen anything about how to turn it into a repeater yet but I'll bet with Tomato or DD-WRT firmware it can be done easily enough.

Costco has the best price on these I could find.

Repeater is setup, most likely, by a setting in the router.

802.11ac not only is many times faster, the new routers also improve the speed and range of 802.11n.  I just upgraded to a D-Link DIR-868L, an AC1750 router, and it's noticeably faster and the 802.11n connections are better too.  The new routers also have both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ radios and if your clients can use the 5GHZ band, you get an even bigger improvement.
