Boston to cherry hill (outside DC ) any suggestions on the route ??

We are taking off from just south of Boston ( Wompatuck State Campground ) and headed to Washington DC for our first ever visit. We want to avoid NY city and any other large congested areas.
We are not on a tight schedule, just want to stay ahead of the really cold weather. I am interested in route recommendations along with points of interest to see along the route. any suggestions ???

Mass Pike to Sturbridge, then west on 84. Stay on 84 until it ends at 81, then south on 81 to 83--on the east side of Harrisburg. take 83 south to 695 -Baltimore beltway-and go south to 95, the south on 95 to Md Rt 212. This is where you get off to go to Cherry Hill. Watch the signs closely here. Getting off 95 on to 212 is a little tricky.

If you take this route, you'll miss all the New York/New Jersy Traffic. It's  a few miles longer, but a much eaiser drive and actually faster bcause of the lighter traffic.  We use it when ever we go north or south. (we live in northeast PA.).

We live in western MA and use the 84/81 every time we go to MO or TN or AL (where are relatives).  It is about 20 miles longer than going through NY city. but avoiding traffic very probably takes less time.

thanks for the suggestion looks like a good route!!  what are the major points of interest along this route, looks as though we will have a little time to stop and look around a bit..  any suggestions of significant historical sites, museums, festivals or fairs etc.,
 
Stop in Sturbridge, MA, at the junction of the Mass Pike and I-84. Excellent colonial recreation village and good restaurant.

There are some interesting architecture and historical locations in and around Hartford, CT.
